Burter (バータ Bāta, lit. "Burtta") is a key member of the Ginyu Force, a mercenary platoon under Frieza’s command in the Dragon Ball series. Known as the "Blue Hurricane," Burter boasts that he is the fastest in the universe, a claim central to his identity and fighting style.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Burter is the tallest and most imposing member of the Ginyu Force. He has a reptilian, humanoid appearance with blue skin, red sclera without pupils, and small spots on his body. His head features a segmented light orange plate, tube-like ears, and no nose. Burter wears a black variant of the standard Frieza Force armor, adorned with the Ginyu Force emblem on his chest plate. Like many in Frieza's army, he uses a green scouter.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Burter is proud and confident, especially regarding his speed, which he claims is unmatched in the universe, even though Frieza is actually faster. He is also quite arrogant, often underestimating his opponents. Burter is good friends with Jeice, with whom he frequently teams up for combo attacks, such as the "Purple Comet Hurricane." When Goku arrives on Namek and proves to be faster, Burter becomes increasingly frustrated and annoyed.

Despite his serious demeanor in combat, Burter, like the other Ginyu Force members, has a comical side. He enjoys posing, playing Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide battle order, and betting candy over fights.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Burter's speed and combat abilities were honed from a young age, partly due to his strict upbringing by his mother, who made him complete all household chores with great urgency. This led him to become "the fastest in the universe." He eventually joined the Ginyu Force, becoming one of Frieza's elite mercenaries.

Dragon Ball Z[edit | edit source]

Frieza Saga[edit | edit source]

Burter and the Ginyu Force are summoned to Namek by Frieza to deal with Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan. Burter showcases his speed by catching a Dragon Ball thrown by Vegeta and returning in seconds, shocking Vegeta. Later, Burter teams up with Jeice to fight Goku but is outmatched by Goku's superior speed and power. Despite his best efforts, Burter is quickly defeated by Goku and is later killed by Vegeta, who snaps his neck while Burter is unconscious.

Majin Buu Saga[edit | edit source]

In the anime, Burter reappears in Hell alongside the rest of the Ginyu Force and other villains. They try to escape by torturing ogres for information but are ultimately defeated by Goku and Pikkon.

Dragon Ball Super[edit | edit source]

During the "Future" Trunks Saga, Burter appears as an illusion created to challenge Goku and Krillin while they search for a special herb in a forest.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes[edit | edit source]

In the Supreme Kai of Time Saga, an incarnation of Burter competes in the Super Space-Time Tournament, but his team fails to advance, resulting in his erasure.

Film Appearances[edit | edit source]

  • Fusion Reborn: Burter makes a cameo among other villains escaping Hell.
  • Broly: Burter is present during King Cold and Frieza’s visit to Planet Vegeta to announce King Cold's retirement and Frieza's succession.

World Mission - Chapter 2, Sub Chapter 3: "An Unthinkable Appearance!"[edit | edit source]

In this chapter, an anomaly causes Frieza and the Ginyu Force, from a period before Frieza encountered Goku, to invade Earth during the time of Mecha Frieza and King Cold's invasion in Age 764. This takes place in the game world's main timeline.

Normal Mission - "Worst Case Scenario"[edit | edit source]

Beat and Note, members of the DBH Team, manage to defeat the anomalous Dodoria and Zarbon, who were sent by the anomalous Frieza to invade Earth in search of the Dragon Balls. They also defeat Mecha Frieza and King Cold. However, the anomalous Frieza and his Ginyu Force arrive in Frieza's spaceship and encounter the cybernetically enhanced Frieza and King Cold. Realizing they are counterparts, the anomalous Frieza agrees to join forces with his counterpart and King Cold after learning about Super Saiyan Goku.

Beat and Note receive backup from Froze and their newest team member, Kagyu. Together, they engage in battle against the combined forces of the anomalous Frieza Force, Mecha Frieza, and King Cold. During this battle, the anomalous Ginyu Force, including Burter, is slain, with only Captain Ginyu barely surviving.

Normal Mission - "A Speedy Showdown!"[edit | edit source]

In this side mission, Beat encounters Burter, Neiz from Cooler's Armored Squadron, and Dyspo of the Pride Troopers. The three are arguing about who is the fastest among them. Burter boasts that he is the #1 fastest, claiming that Dyspo and Neiz can fight over the #2 and #3 spots.

Dyspo, confident in his abilities as the top speedster in the Pride Troopers, declares that he is the fastest in the multiverse. Burter dismisses the Pride Troopers as a show for two-year-olds and asserts his position as the fastest in Frieza's Force. Neiz, loyal to the Cooler Force, mocks Frieza and claims he is the quickest in Cooler's Armored Squadron.

To settle the debate, Dyspo suggests having Beat, who just arrived, decide who is the fastest. Neiz questions Beat's knowledge of speed, but Beat proposes they demonstrate their speed by fighting him. Burter, Neiz, and Dyspo agree, confident in their abilities.

Despite their confidence, Beat manages to defeat all three of them. Dyspo is surprised by Beat's speed and suggests that instead of arguing, they should train together. Burter agrees, leading to the start of a newfound friendship between the three speedsters after their defeat by Beat.

Notable Attacks/Techniques[edit | edit source]

  • Enhanced Speed - Burter has superior speed to others at the same level of power as him, with his speed even surpassing that of the much more powerful Captain Ginyu. Due to this he was considered the "fastest in the universe".
  • Flight – The ability to fly with the use of ki.
  • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Blue Hurricane – First, Burter strikes one of his signature poses as he charges pure blue energy around him. Then, he rushes towards the opponent, knocking out anything in his way, inflicting a great deal of damage.
    • Purple Comet Hurricane – By combining Burter's Blue Hurricane with Jeice's Red Magma, the two of them put up an impenetrable barrier and launch an array of ki blasts at the opponent.
  • Crasher Cannon – Burter and Jeice extend their arms and fire powerful Finger Beams, which explodes on impact.
    • Continuous Crasher Cannon – Jeice and Burter fly around together and fire multiple red and blue blasts of Crasher Cannon from their palms, which form a monsoon of energy blasts that rains down upon the opponent, inflicting massive damage.
      • Purple Spiral Flash - Jeice and Burter charge red and blue energy shields around their bodies respectively and join together to form a large spiraling purple vortex. Out of the vortex fires many purple energy spheres down at the opponent, inflicting high damage.
        • Purple Comet Attack - Jeice and Burter both fly around together but make a different looking vortex. Instead of firing multiple Ki Blasts, the vortex flies toward the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage if it hits.
  • Mach Dash - The user strikes a pose then preforms a high-speed dash that increases the user's movement speed temporarily.
  • Space Mach Attack - Burter attacks his foes at very high speeds in three directions, inflicting considerable damage.
    • Mach Kick - Burter delivers multiple kicks in a rapid succession.
    • Mach Punch - The user attacks the opponent with a series of high-speed punches.
  • SP Fighting Pose 2 – One of Burter's fighting poses. It is a Blast 1 in the Budokai Tenkaichi series, as well as a Super Attack named Burter Pose in the Raging Blast series.
  • Power Stance – A special fighting stance.
  • High Speed Revolution (ハイスピードレボリューション Hai Supīdo Reboryūshon) – A technique used in Dragon Ball Z: The Legend, where Burter circles around his opponent at high speed and fires energy blasts to them from multiple directions.
  • Speed Circle Blasts – Used in The Legend.
  • High Speed Rush – Used in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
  • Mach Attack - Burter's signature attack in the Raging Blast series.
  • Blue Impulse – Used Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z.
  • Fusion - In Dragon Ball Fusions, Burter is capable of performing three different kinds of fusion.
    • Five-Way Fusion - A fusion dance for 5 people invented by the Ginyu Force. When performed by Burter it produces a Male Alien Ultra Fusion.
    • Fusion Dance - Taught to Burter and the rest of the Ginyu Force by Goten and Trunks as thanks for teaching Tekka's Team Five-Way Fusion. Later used by Burter to fuse with Recoome to create Recurter.
      • EX-Fusion - By wearing a Metamo-Ring and performing the Fusion Dance, Burter can fuse with Jeice to create Burce.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Name Origin: Burter's Japanese name, Bāta, is a rearrangement of the word "Butter," continuing the trend of the Ginyu Force members' names being food-related puns. In Viz's manga translation, he's called Butta or Burta to reflect this name pun.
  • Look-alikes: A fighter resembling Burter appears on Grand Kai's Planet in the episode "Warriors of the Dead." The character's clothing and facial features suggest he was based on the same settei (character design) as Moah. Another Burter look-alike appears in "Vegeta's Respect," watching the fight between Goku and Kid Buu, though this character has an albino appearance and horns.
  • Size Discrepancy: While Burter is the largest member of the Ginyu Force in the manga and anime, merchandise often depicts him as the same size or even smaller than Recoome.
  • Budokai Tenkaichi Combos: In Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Burter can deliver the longest combo in the game if he is given max power plus and has his speed maxed out.
  • Dragon Thunder Technique: In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, when Omega Shenron uses the Dragon Thunder technique against Burter, Burter lies on top of the spikes instead of being impaled on them.
  • Fastest in the Universe: Burter is the first character in the Dragon Ball series to refer to himself as the "Fastest in the Universe." This claim is later echoed by Beerus' attendant, Whis, in Dragon Ball Super. However, Burter's claim is proven false as he is outclassed by Goku, and Frieza's speed is likely superior due to his race's natural speed enhancement when near death. Whis, who has existed long before Burter, truly holds the title, as demonstrated in Xenoverse 2, where he uses his speed to playfully mark Beerus' forehead without him noticing.
  • World Mission Rivalry: In World Mission, Burter is shown to have a rivalry with Neiz over who is the fastest. Due to an anomaly, Burter encounters Neiz and Dyspo of the Pride Troopers, leading to an argument among the three about who is the fastest.
  • Dragon Ball GT Absence: Burter is the only member of the Ginyu Force who does not appear in Dragon Ball GT at any point
