Gine (ギネ, Gine) is a female Saiyan, a former low-class warrior, the wife of Bardock, and the mother of Raditz and Goku.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Gine is an adult Saiyan woman of average height and slender build, with a lighter-pale skin tone, onyx eyes, and shaggy black hair that reaches her shoulders. Her hairstyle is somewhat similar to her elder son Raditz's, but shorter with bangs. Her eyes also bear a resemblance to those of her younger son, Kakarot (Goku), before he grew up. Gine is typically seen wearing a sleeveless black bodysuit under dark green combat armor with bronze highlights and white outlines, along with purple armbands and white boots. Her armor features a thigh-length hoop. Unlike most Saiyan adults who secure their tails around their waist, she lets hers hang freely, which is common practice for Saiyans when they are at home on Planet Vegeta. However, on the battlefield, they usually wrap their tails around their waist, as Bardock does when not at home in "Dragon Ball Minus," "Broly," and "Dragon Ball Super."

In "Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden," she wears pink battle armor with blue armbands.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Gine has a gentle, kindhearted, and cheerful personality, marked by a pure and loving nature. These traits, similar to those of her youngest son Goku and her grandsons, Goten and Gohan, made her unsuited for combat, unlike most Saiyans. Her kind disposition led to her developing a genuine and unique bond with Bardock, which is rare among Saiyans, who generally form relationships primarily for reproduction rather than companionship.

Despite her gentle nature, Gine shows a protective side, especially toward her younger son, Kakarot. She briefly argues with Bardock against sending Kakarot to Earth as an infiltration baby, aware of the potential dangers. Nonetheless, she is also shown to be proud of Raditz, her elder son, when he is assigned to invade a planet alongside Prince Vegeta, demonstrating her love and care for both her sons.

In "Dragon Ball Fusions," Gine nearly reveals herself as Kid Goku's mother when she encounters him in the Timespace Rift. However, she decides to keep their familial connection a secret, much like Bardock does when he meets Kid Goku. Gine also shows her protective side when she overhears some fighters plotting to kill a Saiyan before they can transform into a Super Saiyan, intervening despite the risk to herself and ultimately being injured in the process. Her actions echo her son Goku’s well-known willingness to protect innocent people and creatures. When Goku comes to her rescue, she worries about his safety even as he assures her by stopping Yamma's attack. Seeing her son's strength, Gine expresses a desire to help him in some way, acknowledging that Bardock would likely tease her for being overly sentimental.

Gine is also comfortable referring to her son by his Earth name, Goku, though she calls him by his birth name, Kakarot, when they first meet. Her behavior shows her strong maternal instincts, compassion, and a loving nature that is uncharacteristic for most Saiyans, making her a unique figure in Saiyan history.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Gine was once a low-class Saiyan warrior and a member of Team Bardock. During her time on the team, Bardock frequently saved her from dangerous situations on the battlefield. Over time, Gine developed romantic feelings for Bardock, which he eventually reciprocated, creating a unique bond between them. Unlike most Saiyans, who view relationships mainly as a means of reproduction, Bardock and Gine formed a deeper emotional connection. Due to her gentle nature and lack of natural combat instincts, Gine eventually retired from active duty and began working at the meat distribution center on Planet Vegeta. She and Bardock had two sons: Raditz, their firstborn, and Kakarot, their second.

Granolah the Survivor Saga[edit | edit source]

Gine appears in flashbacks during the "Granolah the Survivor Saga," which explore the events leading up to Bardock’s decision to save the young Cerealian Granolah and the Namekian Dragon Clansman Monaito during the Saiyan invasion of Planet Cereal by Team Bardock (Bardock, Leek, and Taro). Bardock is reminded of Gine and their newborn son, Kakarot, when he finds Granolah and his mother, Muezli. He is unable to kill them and instead helps them find shelter with Monaito. Unfortunately, Muezli is killed by the Heeters, leaving Granolah orphaned and fueling his hatred for the Saiyans.

In a brief flashback, Gine introduces Bardock to their newborn son, Kakarot, and wonders if Raditz will be jealous of his younger brother. Bardock reveals that he named their son Kakarot. The scene also shows Bardock's ignorance of concepts unrelated to fighting, such as pregnancy, highlighting his unfamiliarity with the process by noticing that Gine’s belly was smaller. Later in the saga, when Goku hears Monaito mention Bardock’s name, Vegeta confirms that Bardock is Goku’s father. Vegeta also observes that Goku's soft-heartedness seems to run in his family, implying an awareness of Gine’s gentle nature.

When Goku listens to the audio on Bardock's scouter, his memories of his parents, lost due to a head injury as a child, are restored. He recalls Gine on the night he was sent away from Planet Vegeta and remembers other moments with her from his time in the nursing capsule.

Broly Film and Dragon Ball Minus[edit | edit source]

In the "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" film and the "Dragon Ball Minus" manga, Gine appears on Planet Vegeta, working at the meat distribution center. When Bardock returns from a mission, they greet each other warmly. Gine informs Bardock that their elder son, Raditz, is now working with Prince Vegeta and is currently away on a mission. She also confirms that their younger son, Kakarot, is still in the incubator and that he has been there for three years. Gine mentions that she plans to remove him from the incubator soon.

Bardock later decides to steal an Attack Ball to send Kakarot to another planet, suspecting that something dangerous is about to happen to the Saiyan race. Gine questions his intentions, and Bardock reassures her that it is for Kakarot’s safety. Gine remarks that it is unusual for a Saiyan, especially Bardock, to worry about their children, to which Bardock responds that her gentle nature has influenced him.

That night, Bardock brings an Attack Ball, and they place a distressed Kakarot inside. Gine suggests fleeing with Kakarot, but Bardock dismisses the idea, knowing they would be easily tracked by scouters. Gine tries to comfort Kakarot, telling him that if Bardock's fears are unfounded, they will come for him immediately. Bardock warns Kakarot about the dangers of looking at the full moon and promises to inform Raditz of his whereabouts. As the pod rockets away, Bardock wraps his arm around Gine, and they watch their son leave Planet Vegeta.

Fate[edit | edit source]

Gine is presumed to have been killed, along with most of the Saiyan race, when Frieza destroys Planet Vegeta. There are no accounts suggesting her survival beyond this event

Dragon Ball Fusions[edit | edit source]

In Dragon Ball Fusions, Gine appears after Tekka's Team completes the Sub-Event "Father's Fist," where they first encounter Bardock. The team encounters Gine on the 4th Floor of the Timespace Rift by opening a time hole on an island near their spaceship. Gine steps through the time hole and is bewildered by the new surroundings within the rift.

Pan recognizes her as a female Saiyan and becomes excited to meet a pure female Saiyan for the first time, unaware that Gine is actually her great-grandmother. Kid Goku, noticing her Saiyan tail, comments on the similarity, prompting Gine to recognize him and call him by his birth name, Kakarot. Kid Goku feels a sense of familiarity with her but doesn't remember who she is. Gine almost reveals that she is his mother but, much like Bardock, decides to keep their connection a secret, claiming she doesn't know him. However, Goku senses a familiar scent from her, hinting at a retained memory of his parents' scents from infancy. Gine abruptly leaves, and Pan notes that she seemed a bit standoffish.

This encounter leads to the Sub-Event "An Unlikely Pair," where Tekka's Team finds Gine under attack by a group consisting of Rubee, Fargo, Caluppa, Peppa, and Yamma. Gine had attempted to stop them upon overhearing their plan to attack a Saiyan before he could transform into a Super Saiyan. Kid Goku and Tekka's Team come to her defense and defeat the attackers.

After the battle, Goku checks on Gine, who worries for his safety when Yamma attacks him. She is shocked and relieved when Goku successfully stops Yamma's attack, impressed by his strength. Gine is secretly proud of how strong her son has become but casually remarks that Bardock, whom she refers to simply as "a Saiyan she knows," could have defeated the whole group with a single punch. Goku is impressed by this unnamed Saiyan's strength and hopes to become that strong someday, unaware she is speaking of his father.

Concerned about the dangers of the Timespace Rift and wanting to stay close to her son, Gine asks to join Tekka's Team. Tekka agrees, and while Goku is welcoming her to the team, he realizes he doesn’t know her name. She introduces herself as Gine, and he continues to call her by that name, unaware of their familial connection. Reflecting on her decision, Gine thinks of Bardock and tells him that she wants to do something to help their son, musing that he would likely accuse her of being over-sentimental.

Gine also appears in the Sub-Event "Saiyan Saga: Fantastic Fusions," where she is recruited by Tekka's Team to fuse with Towa.

Dragon Ball Heroes[edit | edit source]

In Dragon Ball Heroes, Gine appears during the God Boss fight in the Super Bardock Saga, alongside Xeno Bardock and Chronoa. She fights alongside them in this time-traveling adventure, showcasing her importance within the Saiyan legacy and her connection to her family.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Like other Saiyans, Gine's name is based on a vegetable; in her case, it comes from the spring onion ("葱", negi in Japanese). Coincidentally, her name also comprises the last four letters of "aubergine," the Western European name for eggplant.
  • Gine was first introduced in an interview with Akira Toriyama in the March 2014 issue of Saikyō Jump (released in February 2014). Her character design debuted in Dragon Ball Minus, a short story featured in the collected volume of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman (released on April 4, 2014).
  • Gine is the second named full-blooded female Saiyan in the series after Seripa. Interestingly, her gentle personality contrasts with Seripa’s combative nature, similar to how the meek Universe Six female Saiyan Kale differs from the assertive Caulifla.
  • In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Gine is indirectly referenced through Bardock's Color 02, which gives his battle armor the same color scheme as her armor in Dragon Ball Fusions and Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
  • The storyline where Bardock and Gine send Goku to Earth in Dragon Ball Minus further emphasizes similarities between Goku and Superman: both were sent in spaceships by their parents due to their homeworld's imminent destruction, were raised by kindly elderly adoptive parents on Earth, and became the planet's greatest heroes. However, unlike the planned destruction of Krypton, Planet Vegeta's destruction was a coincidence.
  • Despite her gentle-hearted personality, considered a weakness by the Saiyan Army, Gine's nature would have ironically made it easier for her to accumulate S-Cells (necessary for transforming into a Super Saiyan) through training or Saiyan Power. Her gentle spirit was passed down to her son and grandsons, helping them achieve the transformation.
  • Bardock also showed a more human and gentle side, which he attributed to Gine's "sickness" (a term he used humorously), suggesting he may have inherited a degree of her spirit. This is likely why he accumulated enough S-Cells to transform into a Super Saiyan during his battle with Chilled in Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock.
  • Gine's personality is similar to King Vegeta's younger son, Tarble, as both are gentle-hearted Saiyans who lack the aggression and brutality typical of most Saiyans in Universe 7. Both are considered low-class Saiyans due to this temperament; however, in Tarble's case, it caused him to be seen as an embarrassment to the Saiyan royal family.
  • Despite her gentleness, Gine was proud of her eldest son Raditz for being assigned to work alongside Prince Vegeta. Unlike his parents and younger brother, Raditz was strong enough to be classified as a mid-class Saiyan. Nappa, for example, is on the high end of the mid-class, while Raditz is presumably on the lower end due to his low-class family background.
  • Kakarot initially takes after his mother by being born a low-class Saiyan. It is uncertain if he inherited her gentle nature, as he lost his early life memories following a head injury. In Dragon Ball Minus, Kakarot is shown standing peacefully while eating in Grandpa Gohan's house, suggesting a calm demeanor, but his love of food may have had a pacifying effect on him.
  • Gine shares some similarities with her future daughter-in-law Chi-Chi; she questions Bardock's decision to send Kakarot off-planet. However, unlike Chi-Chi, who is known for her temper, Gine's anger is more subdued. Her attitude is more akin to her granddaughter-in-law, Videl, who is comfortable with her child fighting if they are strong enough.
  • While Gine is often depicted with her tail hanging loose in video games, this is based on her few canonical appearances, which all took place on Planet Vegeta. It is unknown if she followed the Saiyan Army's custom of wrapping the tail around the waist when on the battlefield, like her husband and eldest son, since her time as a member of Team Bardock has not been visually depicted in any canon media.
