Guldo

Guldo (グルド Gurudo, lit. "Ghurd") is the smallest and least physically powerful member of the Ginyu Force. Despite his lack of physical strength, Guldo possesses unique psychic abilities, most notably the ability to stop time for as long as he can hold his breath. This ability is a key factor in his selection as a member of the Ginyu Force. In battle, Guldo tends to be cowardly and desperate, often relying on various tactics to try and overcome his opponents.

Appearance

Guldo is a short, round alien with light green skin and four eyes—two small ones positioned like a human's eyes and two much larger ones located on the sides of his head. He wears a white variant of the standard custom armor worn by Frieza's army, but he does not carry a scouter due to the unique structure of his head. As a member of the Ginyu Force, his armor features the Ginyu Force symbol on one of the chest plates.

Personality

Guldo harbors a deep hatred for Saiyans, particularly Vegeta, due to negative past conflicts between them (as depicted in the original anime). He holds little respect for Saiyans as warriors and especially relishes the opportunity to destroy Vegeta, hoping to win a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors against Recoome, Jeice, and Burter to finally crush his longtime adversary. Guldo exhibits an inferiority complex as the weakest member of the Ginyu Force, often becoming cowardly and desperate when things do not go his way, leading him to resort to tactics he hasn't used in a long time. He is also noticeably out of shape.

Despite his shortcomings, Guldo takes great pride in his position on the Ginyu Force and fears being kicked off the team. He is noted for having a nasty personality, as he planned to eat Gohan and Krillin after skewering them and showed a sadistic side by tormenting the two after paralyzing them. Additionally, Guldo is rather perverted, having used his powers as a child to look up girls' skirts.

Biography

Background

Like the other members of the Ginyu Force, Guldo's special powers manifested during his childhood. He discovered his psychic abilities early on and used them mischievously, such as lifting up girls' skirts and taking whatever toys he desired.

Eventually, Guldo became part of the Frieza Force. He was the last member to join the Ginyu Force and had to pass a membership test by fighting against Burter, Jeice, Recoome, and Captain Ginyu. Allowed to have a partner during this test, Guldo successfully proved his worth and earned his place on the team.

Guldo developed a deep resentment towards Vegeta after the Saiyan Prince insulted him, claiming that Guldo suffered from bad breath and questioning why Frieza would include a "four-eyed frog face" like him in the Ginyu Force. This insult, coupled with Frieza's intervention when Guldo was about to retaliate, caused Guldo to hold a grudge against Vegeta.

In Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2, Guldo hints that he wouldn't be opposed to joining Cooler's Armored Squadron, as he mentions that doing well might give him a chance to join the group in his pre-match dialogue with Cooler.

About a year before the events on Namek, Guldo was invited to join the Ginyu Fitness Club but declined in favor of a Chili Burger diet. This decision ultimately backfired, as it led to a significant loss of stamina.

Dragon Ball Z

Frieza Saga

Upon their arrival on Namek under Frieza's orders, Guldo and the rest of the Ginyu Force find Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan attempting to make a wish with the Dragon Balls. When Vegeta tries to throw one of the Dragon Balls away, Burter quickly catches it with his incredible speed. Vegeta then instructs Krillin to destroy the Dragon Ball he is holding, but before Krillin can do so, Guldo uses his time-freezing ability to snatch it from his hands.

The Ginyu Force members decide who will fight whom by playing a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. Recoome wins and earns the right to fight Vegeta, while Guldo, as the runner-up, is left to fight Gohan and Krillin, much to his dismay. Despite his displeasure, Guldo engages in battle but is surprised by the speed and strength of Gohan and Krillin. This forces him to rely on his time-freezing technique and other sneaky tactics.

However, Guldo finds himself at a disadvantage each time he uses the Time Freeze technique, as Gohan and Krillin are always too close for comfort, causing him to flee and quickly run out of breath due to his poor health. Realizing that the Time Freeze technique won't suffice, Guldo decides to use his full psychic powers. He employs his mind-freeze technique to paralyze Gohan and Krillin, leaving them helpless.

Confident in his victory, Guldo uses his telekinesis to lift a sharp tree trunk, intending to impale Krillin with it. Just as he is about to deliver the final blow, Vegeta intervenes and brutally decapitates Guldo, saving Gohan and Krillin. In the manga, Vegeta does this with a sideways chop, while in the anime, he uses a ki blast. Guldo's severed head rolls on the ground, and he curses Vegeta for interfering, complaining that what Vegeta did was cheap and unfair. Vegeta then disintegrates Guldo's head with another blast.

Later, in the anime, Guldo appears on King Kai's Planet alongside Recoome, Jeice, and Burter. There, he attacks Chiaotzu. Initially, the dead Z Fighters are intimidated by the Ginyu Force, having heard from King Kai that even Vegeta was defeated by them. However, after Tien Shinhan defeats Burter and Jeice, and Yamcha defeats Recoome, Chiaotzu overcomes his fear of Guldo and blasts him into the Bloody Pond, mocking him for his bad breath throughout the battle.

Majin Buu Saga

In the anime, Guldo, alongside Frieza, Cell, King Cold, and the other members of the Ginyu Force, are seen torturing some ogres in Hell to extract information on how to escape. However, when Goku arrives, he defeats all of them with a single blow each. Guldo is specifically taken down by an elbow to the head. Afterward, Guldo falls into the Bloody Pond along with Recoome, Burter, Jeice, and Cell, only to be thrown out by Pikkon's Hyper Tornado, which impales them on a mountain of needles. They are then locked up in a prison cell alongside Frieza and King Cold.

Later, Guldo is seen watching the battle between Kid Buu and Goku from Hell, along with many other villains, through a giant Crystal Ball.

Dragon Ball Super

"Future" Trunks Saga

In this saga, when Goku and Krillin are sent into a mystical forest by Master Roshi to retrieve a special herb, they encounter illusions of past enemies, including Guldo, who challenges the duo alongside many other past villains.

Broly

In the film, Guldo appears alongside the rest of the Ginyu Force during King Cold and Frieza's visit to Planet Vegeta. They are present when King Cold announces his retirement and the transfer of control of his empire to Frieza, much to the concern of the Saiyan Army.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes

Supreme Kai of Time Saga

An incarnation of Guldo appears as one of the participants in the Super Space-Time Tournament, alongside the rest of the Ginyu Force. In the manga, Guldo teams up with Recoome, Jeice, and other villains such as Commander Zeeun, Wings, Angila, Yamu, Spopovich, and Yakon to fight Yamcha. However, their efforts are in vain as Jiren defeats them all with a single blow. Due to their failure to advance to the second round, Guldo and his space-time are erased.

Demon Invader Saga

In a particular space-time, Guldo is absorbed by Majin Ozotto, a powerful antagonist in the Dragon Ball Heroes universe.

Dragon Ball GT

Super 17 Saga

Guldo makes a brief cameo appearance during the Super 17 Saga in Dragon Ball GT. He escapes from Hell alongside many other villains when the barriers between Hell and Earth are temporarily broken. However, like the others, he is quickly defeated once again.

Standard Tactics: Guldo will typically use his Time Freeze technique so that he can escape his foes or attack. If Guldo feels that the foe is beneath him and is a weakling, he will fight more directly, such as the case with Chiaotzu. If Guldo is unable to fire a ki blast due to overusing his Time Freeze technique, he will simply hide while time is frozen in the hopes of recovering energy while the foe looks for him. He does not know about ki sensing nor can he suppress his power, so this tactic is useless against those who can sense energy. If he finds himself in trouble and is desperate, he will paralyze his foe

Weaknesses: His Time Freeze requires him to hold his breath, greatly limiting how long he can use it for. Time Freeze uses up a lot of his energy; if he uses it three times, he won't even be able to fire basic ki blasts. Has poor stamina. He cannot sense energy

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

• Flight – The ability to fly with the use of ki.
• Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy attack.
• Survivability - Similar to his master Frieza, Guldo is able to survive horrific injures and continue to function as shown by ability to live and speak after he was decapitated by Vegeta. It is unknown if this ability is common among Bas or the result of him being a mutant. It is also unknown if he can survive other horrific injuries beyond decapitation.

• Telekinesis – A technique that allows the user to manipulate objects and other people with the power of one's mind.
  • Psychic Rock Throw – The performer uses telekinesis to lift a medium-sized to large boulder from the ground nearby, and then throws it at the opponent, inflicting moderate damage.
  • Paralysis – The user creates a dark navy blue nebula around their opponent to disable their movements.
  • Guldo Special – First, Guldo curls his fingers and powers up. Then, he fires a white-clear beam that paralyzes the opponent by surrounding them with a purple cloud-like aura. Guldo then summons a tree trunk skewer, and he launches it at the opponent with his telekinesis to inflict a high amount of damage.
  • Psycho Javelin – The user grabs a sharp object via telekinesis to utilize as a skewer and launches it at the opponent.
• Time Freeze – The special ability to temporarily stop time, which allows the user to escape an opponent and hide when they find themselves losing a fight.
  • Psycho Escape - The user paralyzes the opponent (or opponents energy waves) with Time Freeze or Telekinesis to evade attacks or to safely retreat from the opponent while they are restrained.
• Bad Breath – While Guldo technically does not use this in his advantage, Guldo possesses very bad breath.
• Punishment of 100 Blows – Guldo says "I’ll beat you within an inch of your life!" as he paralyzes the opponent, and punches and kicks the opponent repeatedly, inflicting a great amount of damage.
• Eye Lasers – The user shoots laser-like beams from both eyes.
• Fighting Pose – Special poses that have different purposes and effects.
  • SP Fighting Pose 3 – One of his fighting poses. It is a Blast 1 in the Budokai Tenkaichi series, as well as a Super Attack named Guldo Pose in the Raging Blast series.
  • Guldo Fighting Pose – Guldo takes on a pose that freezes time if Guldo is hit while using it, and Guldo will move away from the opponent. Used in Battle of Z.
• M.Soundwave – A horrible sound. One of Guldo's techniques in Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors.
• Full Power Energy Blast Volley – Used in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. In Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2, he uses a variation called Psycho Triangle when Ginyu summons him.
• Consecutive Energy Blast - One of Guldo's Super Skills in the Xenoverse series.
• Bloody Sauce - A dark energy sphere Super Skill that splits into multiple spheres that can randomly poison or slow down an opponent hit. One of Dark Guldo's Super Skills granted via Villainous Mode.
• Fusion - In Dragon Ball Fusions, Guldo can preform several different types of fusion.
  • Fusion Dance - A short series of poses that are performed by two characters of equal power levels and roughly equal size.
    • EX-Fusion - An unnatural Fusion technique created by Capsule Corporation through Bulma's development of the Metamo-Ring.
    • Five-Way Fusion - A fusion dance that allows five people to fuse to create a powerful fusion form.

Trivia

• Name Origin: Guldo's name is a pun on the word "yogurt." In the Viz manga, he is called "Gurd" to reflect this pun.
• Manga vs. Anime: In the manga, Vegeta kills Guldo by swiping at his neck with his arm, decapitating him. In the anime, Vegeta uses a ki blast to remove Guldo's head. The Ocean dub of the anime edits this scene, showing Guldo collapsing with his head still attached and his entire body caught in an explosion.
• Goku Encounter: In the manga, Guldo never meets Goku. However, in the anime, Goku easily defeats Guldo in the episode "Warriors of the Dead" with a single blow.
• Time Freeze: Despite being known for his Time Freeze technique, Guldo does not use this ability while in Other World. Instead, he attempts to use his Mind Freeze against Chiaotzu but is interrupted.
• Ginyu Force Dynamics: In the episode "Time Tricks and Body Binds," Burter and Recoome bet on Guldo's battle outcome. Initially, Burter bets that Guldo will lose and Recoome bets he will win. However, as the battle progresses, their positions seem to switch, possibly as a humorous enhancement of the Ginyu Force's goofy nature.
• Continuity Errors: Several inconsistencies are observed in the anime. For example, Guldo's head appears intact even after it was supposedly destroyed. Additionally, in the first edited dub version, his body is digitally added back onto his head after Vegeta's attack, only for his body to appear again later.
• Lack of Scouter: Guldo is never seen wearing a scouter, likely because it wouldn't fit properly on his head due to his four eyes. In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, he expresses a desire for a scouter customized for his head size.
• Weakness and Stamina: Guldo is the weakest member of the Ginyu Force, but his psychic abilities make him a dangerous opponent. His time manipulation is technically superior to that of other characters like Hit, but his poor stamina and low power level limit his effectiveness.
• Similarities with Frieza: Guldo shares traits with his master, Frieza, as both are mutants of their respective races, possess psychic abilities, and can survive severe injuries. However, Frieza's psychic powers and survivability are far superior to Guldo's.
• Time Manipulation: Guldo is the first character in Dragon Ball to demonstrate time manipulation with his Time Freeze ability. Other characters with time-related abilities include Whis, the Supreme Kai of Time Chronoa, and Hit.
• Cooler's Contempt: In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Fifth Form Cooler expresses disdain for Frieza allowing someone as weak as Guldo into the Ginyu Force, highlighting Guldo's low power level.
