Future Trunks (のトランクス Mirai no Torankusu) is a Saiyan-Earthling hybrid and the son of Vegeta and Bulma, both from an alternate future. By the time Present Trunks was born, the timeline had been drastically altered by Future Trunks' and Cell's trips to the past. Therefore, the two Trunks had completely different lives (as opposed to those who lived before the Time Machines arrived, who lived exactly the same lives as their counterparts until the point at which the two timelines diverge, three years before the androids arrived).

Well-mannered, serious and very cautious, Trunks hails from an alternate timeline in which Future Androids 17 and 18 murdered the Dragon Team and proceeded to create an apocalyptic anarchy on Earth. Trunks is trained by Future Gohan as a teenager and becomes a gifted fighter, swordsman and a Super Saiyan, which are traits that aid him greatly in the battle against the Androids after traveling back in time in order to save his own future.

More than 10 years later, Future Trunks would return in Dragon Ball Super, this time fighting against a mysterious entity referred to as Goku Black (and later his counterpart) wreaking havoc in the future. In the end, Trunks (with the help of Goku and Vegeta) neutralizes the threat, though unfortunately, Zamasu not only survives the ordeal, but he becomes an even bigger threat, to the point that Future Zeno was needed to erase him. Trunks himself is one of the three survivors and is currently living in another future timeline where another Future Trunks exists - created in the anime by Whis warning Future Beerus ahead of time to eliminate the soon-to-be rogue Supreme Kai, while in the manga Trunks and Mai travel to their timeline's past and prevent Future Shin's death with the blessing of Beerus as it will save his counterpart, thus eliminating the possibility of the Project Zero Mortals.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Trunks is a slender yet well-built young man with below-average height and fair skin, taking after his father in facial features and complexion. His eyes are blue, and his hair varies in color between lavender, purple, or blue depending on the depiction. His hair is soft, straight, and parts from the top of his head, framing both sides down to his ears with two loose strands over his forehead, traits inherited from his mother.

During his childhood, Trunks wore a white shirt with blue long sleeves bearing the Capsule Corporation emblem on the chest, paired with grey sweatpants and blue boots. In his initial adventures in the present timeline, he sported an indigo jacket that reached his abdomen with the Capsule Corporation logo on the left sleeve, layered over a black tank top. His attire included dark gray pants with a white belt, golden boots, and a prominent accessory: a broadsword in a red sheath slung across his back and over his right shoulder with a blue strap.

For his pivotal battle against Cell, Trunks adopted attire identical to his father's: a blue, skin-tight jumpsuit with Saiyan Battle Armor, complemented by white boots featuring yellow tips and matching white gloves. Following intense training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, he noticeably grew taller and more muscular, though still shorter and leaner than Goku. His hair also grew longer, extending past his shoulders, before later being trimmed back to its original length.

In Dragon Ball Super, Trunks undergoes a wardrobe change from his initial outfit. He wears a periwinkle-colored jacket that reaches his waist, adorned with the Capsule Corporation logo on the left sleeve, paired with a long red scarf draped around his neck. His ensemble includes dark gray pants and pale-green boots with black tips. Underneath the jacket, Trunks sports an olive-green shirt featuring patches on the shoulders and forearms, reminiscent of British military standard issue jumpers. Throughout Dragon Ball Super, his hair and eyebrows maintain a consistent blue color across all media.

In the movie "Bojack Unbound," Trunks retains his primary attire from the Androids Saga, but his indigo jacket is replaced with an identical vest. He continues to maintain his long hair in this appearance.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Trunks, having grown up without his father's influence in an apocalyptic future timeline, exhibits a cautious, brooding, and serious demeanor. Unlike his main timeline counterpart, who mirrors his father's personality, Future Trunks' upbringing in a harsh environment has shaped him differently. He approaches challenges with a pragmatic mindset, often prioritizing practicality over traditional Saiyan pride and arrogance. For instance, he suggested Goku use a Senzu Bean during his battle against Perfect Cell and attempted preemptive strikes against the Androids before their activation.

Due to his intense drive to defeat the Androids by any means necessary, Future Trunks is willing to delay actions if it means uncovering a potential weakness. This is evident when he urged Krillin not to destroy Dr. Gero's lab immediately, hoping to find blueprints that could expose vulnerabilities in the Androids. His fear of the Androids is palpable, particularly heightened with the introduction of Android 16, reflecting his trauma and post-traumatic stress from living in a nightmarish future.

Despite his serious nature, Future Trunks shows profound respect towards everyone, especially his mother, Future Bulma, and his mentor, Future Gohan. When encountering Vegeta in the past, Future Trunks strives to impress him, though he often feels conflicted by Vegeta's cold and indifferent demeanor, especially in moments where Vegeta's actions endanger others, like when he refused to save Bulma and baby Trunks from Dr. Gero's attack. As a result, Future Trunks addresses Vegeta and Bulma with formal titles ("Father" and "Mother"), unlike his main timeline counterpart who uses more affectionate terms. In English dubs of Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super, he adapts to calling them "Mom" and "Dad" like his counterpart, showing a blend of respect and familial attachment despite their differences.

Future Trunks, hailing from a future where he believes he knows the course of events, often assesses situations based on his foresight, sometimes underestimating the impact of unexpected events. Initially, he resisted taking action without Goku's presence and was surprised by outcomes such as the effectiveness of Piccolo's fusion. His reactions to these surprises, distinct from discrepancies in history, occasionally reveal a rare cockiness, like when he first achieved Super Saiyan Third Grade. However, this confidence fades quickly when his perceived advantage proves ineffective.

Shaped by his grim timeline, Future Trunks maintains a serious and determined demeanor akin to his father. Unlike both his father and his alternate timeline self, he exhibits remarkable politeness and manners, evident in his formal speech and respectful demeanor towards allies. Despite his Saiyan heritage, he initially showed little interest in his mother's inventions and doubted Goku's ability to confront the Androids, but his defeat at their hands prompted him to reconsider, embracing new strategies.

In rare instances, Future Trunks displays defiance, such as flipping off Imperfect Cell in the manga, and uses occasional profanity, notably in confrontations like with Kogu. These moments highlight his internal struggle between his composed, respectful demeanor and the urgency and intensity of his battles. After Black's devastating arrival on Earth, pushing humanity to the brink and causing personal tragedy by killing his mother and nearly taking Future Mai, Trunks' post-traumatic stress resurfaced. Mistaking Goku for Black, he impulsively attacked until realizing he had traveled to the past. Even as he found his friends alive and well, Trunks couldn't shake the haunting visions of his destroyed future, casting a perpetual sadness over him. It was only upon reconnecting with Gohan and his family that Trunks began to find moments of solace and enjoyment in the past. Facing threats like the Androids, Future Majin Buu, and Black, Trunks focused solely on immediate challenges rather than preparing for future uncertainties. Vegeta, emphasizing continuous training regardless of current threats, challenged Trunks to understand the value of ongoing growth. This revelation prompted Trunks to not only commit to defeating Black but to surpass his own limits in protecting the future.

Trunks initially relied on others to resolve his crises, causing Vegeta to confront him about his dependency and urging him to take responsibility for his own strength. However, during the intense battle against Fused Zamasu, Trunks turned this perceived weakness into his greatest asset. Drawing upon the collective energy of mortals, he unleashed a bladed Spirit Bomb, demonstrating the power of unity and resolve in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Future Trunks exhibits a high level of tactical prowess, adept at devising and executing intricate battle strategies to gain an upper hand against stronger adversaries. His ability to adapt to opponents' fighting styles allows him to adjust tactics dynamically during combat, enhancing his effectiveness in battle. For instance, he exploited Mecha Frieza's vulnerabilities by using a Burning Attack to create a diversion, enabling him to deliver a decisive blow that incapacitated the tyrant. Against Goku Black, Trunks demonstrated guerilla tactics with Earth's Resistance, evading pursuit long enough to distract Goku Black with a Masenko and escape to the past for aid.

In a notable sparring match against Vegeta, Trunks utilized a strategic bluff with Super Saiyan Third Grade against Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, exploiting his father's reaction to briefly gain an advantage before shifting to Super Saiyan 2 to further press the attack. During his solo defense against Goku Black and Future Zamasu, Trunks learned and adapted to their coordinated assaults, exploiting Zamasu's immortality to temporarily neutralize their teamwork. His use of techniques like the Galick Gun and Final Explosion showcased his resourcefulness and determination in confronting overwhelming odds.

At the conclusion of the "Future" Trunks Saga, as he and Future Mai prepared to depart in the Time Machine, Trunks found solace in bidding farewell to Gohan and Piccolo, cherishing their support and memories of his mentor, Future Gohan. Their encouragement renewed his resolve, shifting his focus towards protecting everyone in the new timeline.

Outside of combat, Future Trunks enjoys convenience store bento as his favorite food and finds enjoyment in tinkering with machines, showcasing a balanced mix of martial prowess and personal interests.

Relationship with Future Mai[edit | edit source]

Future Trunks shares a deep bond with Future Mai that evolved from allies to close companions amidst the chaos caused by Goku Black. They first encountered each other as children shortly after the Pilaf gang's wish for youth, although they didn't initially interact. Their relationship strengthened over time as they fought together against Goku Black's tyranny. Trunks and Mai have repeatedly saved each other's lives, demonstrating a mutual commitment and care. When Trunks believed Mai had been killed by Goku Black, his intense rage led him to attack the dark entity fiercely. Upon his return to the future, Trunks was overwhelmed with relief to discover Mai alive. On another occasion, after Mai sustained severe injuries battling Black, Trunks tenderly healed her with a Senzu Bean in a moment that humorously resembled a kiss.

Despite their deep connection, both Trunks and Mai blushingly deny any romantic involvement whenever others suggest they are in a relationship. This playful denial contrasts with their obvious closeness and mutual support during times of hardship, such as consoling each other after the devastating losses caused by Infinite Zamasu's rampage.

Differences from Present Trunks[edit | edit source]

Future Trunks and Present Trunks, despite being alternate versions of the same character, exhibit significant differences shaped by their respective timelines and experiences.

  1. Personality Differences:
    • Future Trunks: Grew up in a harsh, post-apocalyptic world, making him serious, cautious, and battle-hardened. He lacks the cockiness and arrogance of Saiyans like his father, preferring to analyze situations before acting. He's strategic and adaptive in combat, traits honed from years of fighting against overwhelming odds.
    • Present Trunks: Raised in a peaceful era with both parents, he inherits his father's confident and sometimes brash demeanor. Present Trunks is more carefree and prone to jumping into action without much forethought, contrasting sharply with his future counterpart's calculated approach.
  2. Relationship with Future Gohan:
    • Future Trunks: Views Future Gohan as his mentor and best friend, as they bonded closely while facing the Androids together. Future Gohan's death deeply impacts him, driving Trunks to carry on his legacy and fight for a better future.
    • Present Trunks: Grows up with both Vegeta and Bulma, having a more traditional family dynamic. While he respects and admires his father, Present Trunks doesn't share the same mentor-student relationship with Gohan that Future Trunks does.
  3. Meeting Each Other:
    • Video Games: Prior to Dragon Ball Super, video games depict different reactions when Future Trunks meets his younger self. They range from surprise and sparring matches to nuanced interactions that highlight their contrasting experiences.
    • Dragon Ball Super: When they finally meet in the anime and manga, Present Trunks initially admires his older self's strength and courage. However, jealousy briefly arises when Mai shows interest in Future Trunks, leading Present Trunks to try emulating his future self's mannerisms to win her over.
  4. Bond and Growth:
    • Dragon Ball Super Continuity: As they interact more, Present Trunks develops a deep respect and affection for his older counterpart. He empathizes with Future Trunks' struggles and becomes supportive, treating him almost like an older brother. This bond strengthens as they face challenges together, bridging the gap between their different timelines.

In essence, while both Trunks share a lineage and certain traits, their environments and life experiences shape them into distinct personalities. Future Trunks' resilience and strategic acumen contrast with Present Trunks' spirited and more impulsive nature, making their interactions both complex and enriching within the Dragon Ball universe.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

In Age 766, Trunks was born into an alternate timeline plagued by devastation. This future was marred by the relentless tyranny of Androids 17 and 18, who had decimated over three-fourths of Earth's population before Trunks' introduction. This grim reality unfolded due to Goku's death from a heart virus six months prior to the Androids' arrival, leaving the Z Fighters without their strongest warrior. The Androids easily surpassed the remaining Z Fighters, including Vegeta, who were unable to be revived using the Dragon Balls after Piccolo's death eliminated Kami.

Raised in this bleak era, Trunks found guidance and mentorship from the last remaining Z Fighter, Future Gohan. Gohan trained Trunks extensively, imparting both combat skills and swordsmanship, essential for facing the Androids' superior power. Despite Gohan's efforts to teach Trunks to achieve Super Saiyan status, Trunks initially struggled to transform due to his inability to connect with the profound sadness and loss required to trigger the transformation (though in the manga, he had already achieved this form).

At the age of 14, during a battle at Super World amusement park, Trunks and Gohan confronted the Androids in a desperate struggle. Inexperienced and overwhelmed, Trunks was nearly defeated by Android 18, prompting Gohan to sacrifice himself to save Trunks, losing an arm in the process. This sacrifice deeply affected Trunks, shattering his confidence and further complicating his journey to harness his latent potential as a Super Saiyan.

In Age 780, Trunks and Gohan found themselves once again thrust into battle against the Androids. Recognizing the dire threat they faced, Gohan made a heartbreaking decision to knock Trunks unconscious to prevent him from facing certain death. Despite Gohan's valiant effort at Pepper Town, where he initially held his own against the Androids individually (in the anime), he was ultimately overwhelmed by their combined strength and limitless energy reserves. Tragically, Gohan was defeated and killed before Trunks regained consciousness and found his mentor's lifeless body in the rain.

Filled with a potent mix of anger and grief over Gohan's death, Trunks finally tapped into his latent potential and achieved the Super Saiyan transformation. However, despite his newfound power, Trunks continued to struggle in his ongoing battles against the Androids over the next few years, driven by a relentless desire to avenge his fallen comrades.

By Age 783, after narrowly escaping another deadly encounter at Bridgetown, Future Bulma revealed her Time Machine to Trunks. She implored him to use it to travel back to the past, aiming to alter history by preventing Goku's death from the heart virus. In this bleak future, Trunks had never known his father, Vegeta, who had been killed by the Androids when Trunks was still an infant. This revelation underscored Trunks' determination to change the course of history and save his world from its nightmarish fate.

Dragon Ball Z[edit | edit source]

Frieza-Androids Interlude[edit | edit source]

In Age 784, Trunks made a pivotal journey back in time, traveling 20 years into the past to warn Goku about the looming android threat and to deliver life-saving medication to cure Goku of the deadly heart virus. Upon arrival, he unexpectedly encountered Frieza and King Cold, who had arrived on Earth seeking vengeance against Goku and his loved ones.

Despite appearing unassuming to Frieza, Trunks confidently implied his ability to transform into a Super Saiyan. Initially skeptical, Frieza was stunned when Trunks effortlessly demonstrated his transformation, revealing his immense power. Frieza, infuriated by Trunks' defiance, launched several attacks at him, all of which Trunks skillfully blocked or evaded with ease.

In a moment of frustration, Frieza unleashed a devastating Supernova attack. Trunks intercepted the blast and nonchalantly redirected it back at Frieza, severely injuring him. Following this, Trunks swiftly defeated Frieza with his Burning Attack and Shining Sword Attack techniques.

Soon after, King Cold, undeterred by his son's defeat, confronted Trunks, only to meet a similar fate at the hands of Trunks' God Breaker attack.

Having dispatched both adversaries, Trunks then guided the Dragon Team to Goku's landing spot, where they awaited Goku's arrival. During this time, Trunks caught the attention of Vegeta, his father whom he had never met in his own timeline, causing some curiosity and tension among the Z Fighters.

When Goku finally arrived, Trunks informed him of the dire future awaiting them due to the androids' impending arrival. He cautioned Goku not to disclose anything about his parentage. Despite Trunks' intent to prevent unnecessary interference with the timeline, Piccolo overheard the conversation and shared the grim future with the other Z Fighters, motivating them to intensively train for the forthcoming android threat.

Androids Saga[edit | edit source]

In Trunks' altered timeline, events unfolded differently after his initial visit to the past. Goku, instead of succumbing to the heart virus, contracted it during the battle with Android 19. Vegeta intervened, showcasing his newfound Super Saiyan power by effortlessly destroying Android 19 with his Big Bang Attack. This marked a significant divergence from Trunks' original timeline.

Approximately 18 months later, a now 19-year-old Trunks returned to the past and discovered Android 19's head on the Southern Continent, along with the unexpected presence of Android 20, who was revealed to be Dr. Gero himself. Trunks realized that this timeline was veering considerably from his own. Dr. Gero activated the true androids of Trunks' future—Androids 17 and 18—who promptly rebelled against their creator and released Android 16, previously unknown to Trunks.

The androids in this timeline proved to be much stronger than those Trunks had faced in his own future. Android 18, in particular, demonstrated formidable strength by easily overpowering both Super Saiyan Vegeta and Super Saiyan Trunks together. Vegeta engaged Android 18 in battle but was ultimately defeated. Trunks rushed to his father's aid, attempting to attack Android 18 with his sword, only to be shocked when she effortlessly blocked the blow, causing his sword to crack. Moments later, Android 17 swiftly incapacitated Trunks. Despite being temporarily defeated, Trunks recovered and continued to fight, but was ultimately overwhelmed and reverted to his base form.

After the battle, Trunks and Krillin escorted Goku to safety at Kame House. During their journey, Trunks proposed a plan to return further back in time using his Time Machine to destroy the androids before they were activated. Yamcha and Krillin supported the idea, but Krillin raised concerns about whether Trunks could return to his own future after traveling farther back. Trunks explained that each trip to the past creates a new future timeline, highlighting the complexities of time travel.

Reflecting on his initial trip to their timeline, Trunks admitted that he had hoped to find a weakness in the androids or bring Goku back to his future. Despite the uncertainties, Chi-Chi reassured Trunks that his intervention had saved Goku's life in their timeline, which everyone agreed was a positive outcome given the circumstances.

Cell Saga[edit | edit source]

In this intriguing sequence from Dragon Ball Z, Trunks and Gohan investigate the appearance of a mysterious Time Machine identical to Trunks' own, which they discover wrecked and covered in moss in a remote location. Bulma informs them that a farmer found it and reported it to Capsule Corporation, prompting Trunks to investigate with Gohan's company. During their flight to the location, Gohan asks Trunks about the devastation in his future timeline, where only tens of thousands remain living in underground shelters due to the Androids' reign of terror.

Upon arriving at the scene, they confirm the Time Machine's identity through a faxed photo from Bulma, surprising Trunks who knows only one was made in his future. They uncover a message from Future Bulma on the damaged Time Machine, reading 'HOPE!', and notice peculiarities such as a melted cockpit window and the presence of a strange, gooey husk nearby—potentially the aftermath of a molting insect that emerged from an egg found inside the machine.

Trunks activates the Time Machine, revealing it to have traveled from Age 788, three years after his initial trip, and to have been there for four years—well before Trunks defeated Frieza and King Cold in the altered timeline. Confused by these discoveries, Trunks decides to capsule the second Time Machine for safekeeping, while they ponder the implications of its presence and the strange developments surrounding it.

The encounter leaves Trunks questioning the changes in history and the mysterious events unfolding around his timeline and the altered future he encountered upon returning to the past.

Trunks and Krillin respond to news of a mysterious disappearance in Gingertown, suspecting it to be linked to the creature that emerged from the egg they discovered earlier. Despite warnings, Trunks decides to investigate, feeling responsible for what might be a new threat.

As they head towards Gingertown, they sense Cell's immense power, which resonates with energies from Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza, and King Cold, shocking the Z Fighters with its magnitude. Krillin reveals that Piccolo has merged with Kami, significantly boosting his strength. They witness an explosion in the distance, realizing Piccolo has engaged the creature.

Arriving at Gingertown, they find Piccolo battling Cell, leaving Trunks astonished by the creature's appearance, connecting it to the egg they found earlier. Cell manages to escape using Solar Flare, frustrating Piccolo. Vegeta arrives, and Trunks informs him about Piccolo's fusion with Kami, which surprises the Saiyan prince.

When Tien joins them, Piccolo explains Cell's origins and his plan to absorb the Androids and achieve his perfect form, alarming Trunks with the threat Cell poses due to his ability to absorb the Dragon Team's cells. Vegeta resolves to surpass Super Saiyan and defeat the androids himself, while Piccolo directs Trunks and Krillin to stop the present Cell to prevent another from appearing in the future.

Trunks affirms to Krillin that altering the past won't change their timeline but agrees they must eliminate the present Cell to prevent further catastrophe. With their roles defined, Trunks and Krillin prepare to confront Cell while Piccolo and Tien focus on tracking him down, setting the stage for a critical showdown against this formidable new enemy. After locating Dr. Gero's lab and finding Cell in his larval form, Trunks and Krillin decide to destroy the lab but not before Trunks discovers blueprints for Android 17. Recognizing their potential value, Trunks plans to take them to Bulma to decipher any weaknesses in the Androids' design. They destroy the lab and part ways, with Trunks heading off to train with Vegeta despite his reservations about his father's harsh demeanor. Three days later, Goku and Gohan, now recovered, teleport to where Trunks and Vegeta are training. Trunks is glad to see Goku and updates him on their training, mentioning that Vegeta hasn't interacted much with him, preferring to stand alone on a ledge. Goku proposes using the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to enhance their training, catching Vegeta's attention. He agrees to enter the chamber with Trunks first, intrigued by its potential despite the challenging conditions.

As they enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Trunks immediately feels the intense heat, thin air, and high gravity. He marvels at the chamber's vast emptiness, contemplating the prospect of spending a year alone with Vegeta. Despite his initial doubts, Trunks braces himself for the rigorous training ahead, determined to surpass their formidable enemies through their combined efforts.

After emerging from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Trunks joins the others at The Lookout. He apologizes for the delay, to which Goku comments on the extended training period with Vegeta. Trunks explains that Vegeta achieved surpassing the Super Saiyan form within two months but continued training in pursuit of greater power, though Vegeta interrupts him abruptly, signaling him to stop speaking further.

Bulma arrives and notices Trunks' physical growth and longer hair, reflecting his rigorous training in the chamber. She provides them with battle suits she had prepared. Goku, before they depart to confront Cell, gives Trunks several Senzu beans and encourages him to do his best.

Trunks soon joins Vegeta on the island where Cell awaits. Cell dismisses Trunks as a mere spectator, but Vegeta insists he alone is enough to defeat Cell. As Vegeta overwhelms Cell with his newfound power, Cell grows frustrated, expressing his desire to achieve his Perfect Form to surpass Vegeta. Vegeta urges Cell to go and attain his Perfect Form, but as Cell moves to leave, Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and intervenes against Vegeta's wishes. During the intense confrontation, as Cell moves towards Android 18 with the intent of achieving his Perfect Form, Trunks spots them and shouts a warning. His declaration startles Android 18, Android 16, and Krillin, who begin to panic upon realizing they've been noticed by Cell. Trunks, determined to prevent Cell from reaching his full potential, transforms into the Super Saiyan Second Grade form, similar to Vegeta's, and rushes after Cell. However, Vegeta intervenes forcefully, kicking Trunks away into a nearby mountain. Bruised but undeterred, Trunks stands up amidst the rubble and confronts his father, warning him of the dire consequences of allowing Cell to achieve his Perfect Form. Vegeta, consumed by his own thirst for battle and power, challenges Trunks' resolve, questioning whether his son would actually attack him. Defiantly, Trunks fires a Super Buster Cannon at Vegeta to prove his seriousness before turning his attention back to Cell.

Cell, seizing the opportunity amidst the chaos caused by his Solar Flare, absorbs Android 18 and finally achieves his Perfect Form. Vegeta watches with anticipation, while Trunks, Krillin, and the others are filled with fear and dismay. Enraged at his father's actions, Trunks charges at Cell, but Cell protects himself with an Energy Field that completes his transformation uninterrupted.

Once Cell emerges in his perfected state, Krillin, overcome with anger and ignoring Trunks' warnings, attacks Cell futilely. Cell effortlessly retaliates, testing his newfound power by casually striking Krillin, nearly fatally injuring him. Witnessing Krillin's peril, Trunks acts swiftly, rushing to his friend's aid and saving him with a Senzu Bean.

In the intense battle against Cell, after Krillin warns Trunks about Vegeta's peril, Trunks expresses concern but acknowledges Krillin's astute sense of power levels. Krillin explains his ability to gauge strength despite not being a Saiyan, noting Cell's casual dismissal of his own formidable power. Trunks admits that he and Vegeta both surpassed the regular Super Saiyan form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but Trunks achieved an even higher level that he kept hidden from his father, fearing it would bruise Vegeta's pride.

Trunks grows increasingly frustrated watching Vegeta being dominated by Cell, lamenting that Vegeta missed the opportunity to finish Cell when he had the chance. Krillin urges Trunks to intervene and help Vegeta unleash his latent power to survive, but Trunks understands his father's pride would prevent him from accepting such assistance. Reluctantly, Trunks decides to wait until Cell incapacitates Vegeta before taking action.

As Vegeta charges his Final Flash, a devastatingly powerful attack aimed at Cell, Trunks desperately tries to dissuade him, fearing the destructive potential could obliterate Earth. Despite Trunks' pleas, Vegeta initiates the attack but ultimately weakens it at the last moment to prevent catastrophic collateral damage. Cell, though severely damaged, survives due to his regenerative abilities from Frieza and Piccolo's cells, demonstrating his resilience against the odds.

In a desperate attempt to overpower Cell, Vegeta unleashes a barrage of ki blasts, but Cell easily endures the assault and retaliates with a devastating punch that sends Vegeta hurtling through the air. Despite his resilience, Vegeta manages to stand again, only to be swiftly struck by Cell's powerful kick, launching him further upwards. Cell then follows up with a crushing elbow strike to Vegeta's back, driving him forcefully into the ground and rendering him unconscious.

In the critical moment, Trunks takes a calculated risk by stalling Cell to allow Krillin to rescue the unconscious Vegeta with a Senzu Bean. Transforming into his Super Saiyan Third Grade form, Trunks confronts Cell, surprising both Cell and Krillin with his tremendous power. Despite Krillin's offer of the Senzu Bean, Trunks confidently asserts that he won't need it.

Initially, Cell gains the upper hand in their battle, overwhelming Trunks and sending him flying. However, Trunks signals to Krillin that he's intentionally luring Cell away from Vegeta, revealing his strategic approach to the fight. As Cell continues his assault, Krillin seizes the opportunity to carry Vegeta to safety.

Cell acknowledges Trunks' strategy and newfound power, expressing genuine interest in facing him without distractions. Trunks, sensing Cell's challenge, powers up once more, preparing to engage Cell seriously. Though Cell acknowledges Trunks' formidable strength, he remains confident in his own abilities. Trunks, undeterred, charges forward, determined to prove Cell wrong and emerge victorious in their battle.

In the intense battle against Perfect Cell, Future Trunks' transformation into Super Saiyan Third Grade, also known as Ultra Super Saiyan, proves to be a critical misstep. Despite the immense power it grants him, Trunks becomes overly bulky and slow, severely limiting his effectiveness in combat. Cell, without even powering up, easily dodges Trunks' attacks and taunts him for relying solely on brute strength. Cell mockingly transforms into a similarly bulky form to demonstrate its uselessness without speed, echoing Vegeta's earlier decision to avoid this form due to its weaknesses.

Realizing his error and feeling defeated, Trunks reverts to his base form and offers no resistance as he believes he has no chance against Cell. Surprisingly, Cell is impressed by the power increase shown by Trunks and Vegeta in such a short time and asks how they achieved it. Trunks, determined not to reveal the secrets of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, remains silent. Instead of pressing further, Cell proposes a martial arts tournament in ten days, challenging Trunks to gather allies and get stronger to face him in one-on-one battles. Trunks is left bewildered by Cell's new plan and his ambiguous goals, but Cell reveals that while his initial aim was to kill Goku, he now wants to test the limits of his perfect form and enjoy causing fear and chaos on Earth before its destruction.

Shocked and horrified by Cell's intentions, Trunks is left to contemplate the impending threat as Cell departs, leaving Krillin and the recovering Vegeta to arrive on the scene.

After the revelation of Cell's plan for the Cell Games tournament, tensions rise among Trunks, Vegeta, and Krillin. Vegeta, ever confident in his abilities, dismisses the need for Goku or Trunks, declaring he will defeat Perfect Cell alone after his next round of training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Trunks, however, remains focused on his own plan to return to the chamber after Goku and Gohan finish their training.

The situation takes a turn when the damaged Android 16 appears, expressing a desire to participate in the tournament after repairs at Capsule Corporation. Trunks vehemently opposes helping or trusting Android 16, driven by his deep-seated distrust of androids due to his future experiences. In contrast, Krillin, acknowledging the androids of this timeline are different, agrees to assist 16, seeing the necessity of all available allies against Cell.

The next day, Trunks and his family eagerly monitor the news, awaiting Cell's announcement of the Cell Games. Cell interrupts a live broadcast, boldly challenging Earth's strongest fighters to battle him in one-on-one combat. Amidst preparations, Vegeta announces his intention to train again in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, with Trunks deciding to join him. However, before departing, Bulma insists on giving Trunks a haircut to prevent his long hair from obstructing his vision—a suggestion that irritates Vegeta, though he begrudgingly accepts.

At the Lookout, the atmosphere is tense as Goku and Gohan emerge from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber earlier than expected, their Battle Armor in tatters. Trunks quickly updates them on everything that transpired while they were training: Cell's transformation to his perfect form and the announcement of the Cell Games.

Rather than being alarmed, Goku is eager for the upcoming tournament, requesting his Turtle School uniform from Mr. Popo. Trunks offers them new armor, but Goku declines, opting to fight as an Earthling. Gohan requests attire similar to Piccolo's, showing his readiness for battle.

Vegeta, always focused on strength, asks Goku bluntly if he believes he can defeat Cell. Goku admits uncertainty, stating he needs to gauge Cell's power firsthand. Using Instant Transmission, Goku teleports to the Cell Games Arena and quickly returns. Trunks presses Goku for his assessment, and Goku candidly admits he doesn't think he can win.

Piccolo suggests Goku and Gohan return to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but Goku surprises everyone by declaring they will train in the outside world instead. This decision shocks Piccolo and Tien, impressed by Goku and Gohan's composure as Super Saiyans.

Trunks, reflecting on their mastery of the Super Saiyan form to conserve energy, realizes his own oversight in planning. Vegeta chides him for his naivety, emphasizing the strategic depth Goku and Gohan have shown. This revelation prompts Trunks to reconsider his approach to training and combat strategy, recognizing the importance of mastering techniques over pure power. The next day at the Lookout, tensions remain high as Vegeta impatiently awaits Piccolo's exit from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. When Piccolo finally emerges, Trunks acknowledges the noticeable increase in his strength, but Vegeta dismisses Piccolo's efforts, criticizing him for not achieving greater gains. Meanwhile, Goku returns to the Lookout accompanied by Dende, a young Namekian who has been chosen as Earth's new Guardian. Dende immediately sets about recreating the Dragon Balls. While Dende converses with Gohan and Krillin, Trunks approaches Goku with a question about Cell's weakness, assuming Goku's newfound calmness indicates a strategic advantage. However, Goku surprises Trunks by stating he doesn't believe Cell has a weakness, leaving Trunks perplexed.

Goku instructs Gohan to stay with Dende and informs him that there's no need for further training until the Cell Games. Gohan is taken aback by this sudden decision, prompting Trunks to inquire about Goku's plan and his seemingly unwavering confidence despite knowing Cell's superior strength. Gohan admits he's unsure of Goku's intentions, while Krillin suggests Goku may have a hidden strategy. Piccolo, however, speculates that Goku might have accepted the possibility of defeat, raising concerns among the group. On the day of the Cell Games, all seven warriors gather at the arena, including Vegeta, Android 16, and Mr. Satan. When Mr. Satan boldly steps up to face Cell first, he is swiftly defeated and sent flying into a nearby mountain, though miraculously survives. With Mr. Satan out of the way, Goku steps forward to face Cell, initiating a fierce battle that quickly ensues. Trunks and the rest of the Dragon Team watch anxiously as Goku and Cell engage in combat, showcasing their incredible power. As the fight intensifies, Cell notices Goku's decreasing strength and offers him a Senzu Bean to continue the battle. Trunks urges Krillin to give Goku the Senzu Bean and suggests they all attack Cell together to ensure victory. However, Vegeta sharply rebukes Trunks, asserting that Goku fights alone out of Saiyan pride and determination. He believes Goku would rather die than accept help in this manner, emphasizing that Goku isn't merely fighting for Earth's sake but for his own reasons as well.

Trunks expresses concern that Goku won't last much longer against Cell, and Vegeta grimly acknowledges that Goku may indeed be killed in the battle. Trunks questions their next move, but Vegeta insists they must trust Goku's judgment and hope he has a hidden strategy, as Trunks had previously suggested. However, in a surprising turn of events, Goku declares that he gives up, shocking everyone present, including Cell. He calls upon his son Gohan to take over the fight, believing Gohan possesses the potential to defeat Cell where he cannot.

The unexpected turn leaves Trunks and the others stunned, unsure of what to make of Goku's decision and what lies ahead in the Cell Games. In an attempt to bring out Gohan's true power, Trunks is forced to contend with Cell's offspring along with the other heroes. While he and Vegeta were the only ones strong enough to hold their own, they began slowly and gradually losing the fight. Meanwhile, Android 16 encourages Gohan to set his rage free and to not hold back in order to protect the wild animals and the forests he loved. Cell, however, finally has enough, and smashes Android 16's head, killing him off for good. Witnessing the peaceful android's death finally pushes Gohan over the edge and his hidden power erupts, transforming him into a Super Saiyan 2, shocking everyone present. First, Gohan takes back the stolen bag of Senzu Beans from Cell and then effortlessly defeats the Cell Juniors with simple, yet powerful blows. Afterwards, Gohan gives an awestruck Trunks the bag of Senzu Beans to treat to the fallen Z Fighters and heal their wounds while he faces Cell. In the intense aftermath of Gohan's battle with Cell, the Bio-Android resorts to a desperate and deadly plan to self-destruct, intending to obliterate Earth along with himself. Goku sacrifices his life by teleporting Cell to King Kai's Planet, where the explosion occurs, hoping to save Earth. However, Cell survives and returns to the battlefield, significantly weakened. In a cruel twist, Cell randomly fires a Full Power Death Beam that strikes Future Trunks, mortally wounding him. As Cell boasts about his renewed power, Vegeta is left in shock and anguish over Trunks' severe injuries. Trunks, on the verge of death, coughs up blood as Yamcha and Tien rush to his aid, realizing he has passed away.

This tragic loss deeply impacts Vegeta, triggering a profound emotional response as he mourns the death of his son. Vegeta, consumed by rage and grief, unleashes everything he has in a desperate attempt to defeat Super Perfect Cell. However, despite his relentless assault, Cell effortlessly withstands Vegeta's attacks and inflicts severe injuries on him with minimal effort. Gohan intervenes to protect Vegeta, but at the cost of sustaining a debilitating injury to his left arm.

After Cell's defeat and the emotional aftermath, Future Trunks is brought to The Lookout where Shenron grants the wish to revive him, along with all those killed by Cell except Goku, who remains in the afterlife by choice. The Dragon Team plans to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to bring Goku back, but Goku, speaking through King Kai, declines, believing Earth is safer without him drawing in villains. He bids a final farewell to everyone, leaving the protection of Earth to Gohan.

With their wishes fulfilled, Tien departs first, expressing uncertainty about their future meetings and wishing Trunks luck against the androids in his timeline. The rest of the group disperses as well, each going their separate ways. Trunks announces his intention to return to the future the next day.

As they fly to Capsule Corporation, Yamcha shares with Trunks how Vegeta reacted to his death, which surprisingly fills Trunks with pride for his father. Amid celebrations for Cell's defeat, Trunks presents Bulma with the Time Machine that Cell used to travel to their era[2]. Vegeta acknowledges Trunks during their goodbyes, marking a poignant moment of mutual respect and recognition between father and son.

After bidding his farewells, Trunks travels back to his own time driven by a fierce determination to avenge the Z Fighters slain by the androids. Upon reuniting with his mother, Bulma, Trunks hears a news report revealing the androids' whereabouts. Instantly, he transforms into his Super Saiyan state, enhanced by rigorous training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Arriving at Parsley City, where the androids are threatening an innocent man, Trunks launches a precise energy attack that narrowly misses Android 17. Underestimating Trunks' power, the cocky androids rush at him, only to face his swift evasion and devastating counterattacks. Trunks swiftly eliminates Android 18 with a point-blank energy blast, leaving Android 17 stunned and enraged. In a single decisive blow, Trunks defeats 17, reducing him to dust effortlessly. With peace seemingly restored on Earth, Trunks returns home unscathed, though aware that the looming threat of Cell still persists in his timeline.

Three years later, the determined Bio-Android roamed in his Imperfect form and stumbled upon Trunks and Bulma bidding their farewells near the time machine. Trunks, now 23 years old, sensed Cell's presence and swiftly sent his mother away. Cell approached with misplaced confidence, assuming Trunks remained at his earlier power level when he first warned Goku, far weaker than the future androids and significantly inferior to Cell himself. To Cell's surprise, Trunks revealed that he had already eradicated the androids and began taunting him with details from the alternate timeline.

Enraged by this revelation, Cell contemplated using the time machine to travel back and absorb the androids again, but Trunks attacked him preemptively. The battle ensued, with Trunks clearly outclassing Cell, effortlessly hurling him outside the city with a simple energy wave in his base form. Transitioning into a Super Saiyan, Trunks continued to dominate Cell with ease. As Trunks declared Cell's impending demise, the Bio-Android grew enraged and launched his tail at Trunks in a desperate counterattack.

Trunks swiftly grabs Cell's tail and spins him in a circle, building momentum before hurling him high into the air. As Cell struggles with the realization of his impending defeat against Trunks' newfound power, he prepares a massive Kamehameha, intending to obliterate the planet, confident in his ability to survive in space. However, before Cell can unleash the attack, Trunks powers up and releases an enormous, devastating wave of energy that completely incinerates Cell.

With Cell finally defeated, Trunks stands amidst the peace of his future, looking up towards the sky. He silently thanks Goku and his friends from the past one last time, knowing that their efforts and sacrifices were crucial in achieving this victory and ensuring the safety of his timeline.

Interlude

Several years later, Trunks received an invitation from Shin to train at the Sacred World of the Kai in preparation for Babidi's impending arrival. During his training, Trunks successfully pulled out the Z Sword and dedicated himself to mastering its use to enhance his strength. Both Shin and Kibito were impressed by Trunks' ability to wield the Z Sword skillfully.

To finalize his training, Shin decided to test the Z Sword's sharpness by having Trunks cut through a block of Katchin, known as the hardest metal in the universe. However, before the test could proceed, Kibito sensed Babidi's movements on Earth, prompting them to return immediately. Trunks requested to change back into his normal clothes for the impending battle.

Back on Earth, Trunks joined Shin and Kibito in combating Babidi's minions. He played a crucial role in defeating Pui Pui and Yakon. Subsequently, Trunks engaged in a fierce battle against Dabura, transforming into a Super Saiyan and wielding the formidable Z Sword to confront the demon king.

During their intense battle, Dabura spat on the Z Sword, causing it to petrify. Shin urgently ordered Trunks to release the sword, which shattered upon hitting the ground after turning completely to stone. Dabura then incinerated the broken sword with his fire breath. In the ensuing struggle, Dabura struck Trunks, who held his ground despite being pushed back.

Realizing his miscalculation about Babidi's influence over Dabura, Shin vowed to prevent Majin Buu's revival and charged at Babidi. However, Dabura intercepted Shin's attack and Babidi began tormenting him. Seeing Shin in danger, Kibito attempted to help but was blasted by Dabura. Enraged, Trunks transformed into Super Saiyan 2 and fiercely attacked Dabura. Despite Dabura's defense of Babidi, Trunks managed to deliver a powerful kick that fatally wounded Babidi.

As Dabura prepared to retaliate with his spear, Shin immobilized him, allowing Trunks to finish him off with a Burning Attack. With peace restored, Shin expressed relief before passing away.

In the anime, Future Trunks had significantly increased his strength and, guided by Shin's instructions, confronted and defeated Future Dabura along with Future Babidi, thereby preventing the resurrection of Future Majin Buu.

"Future" Trunks Saga[edit | edit source]

Years after defeating Future Dabura and Future Babidi, and nine years post the defeat of Future Cell in Age 796, an ominous figure named Black unleashes devastation, pushing humanity to the brink of extinction. Trunks, determined to halt Black's rampage, confronts him but is unable to stop him. With the situation dire, Bulma proposes seeking aid from Goku and Vegeta in the past.

Six months later, Bulma secures enough fuel for a one-way journey to the past in the Time Machine. However, Black intervenes, obstructing their plans. Future Trunks shields his mother as Black destroys their laboratory. Witnessing Black's cruelty firsthand, Future Trunks is stunned to see Future Bulma captured by him. Despite her urging to prioritize their journey to the past, Black launches another devastating ki blast, annihilating the lab and Future Bulma, leaving Trunks horrified.

Gathering himself, Trunks resolves to find Future Mai, knowing that their immediate goal must be returning to the past at any cost.

Trunks searches for Mai, initially concerned when he receives no answer at her door, but relieved when he finds her. Mai asks about Bulma's whereabouts, only to be heartbroken upon learning of her death at the hands of Black. Trunks mourns the loss of his mother, yet reignites their hope by showing Mai the energy Bulma sacrificed her life to obtain, emphasizing their chance to return to the past. They are later seen together in a room, where Mai offers Trunks rest and food, but he declines. They notice a kitten passing by and feed it, with Trunks eventually sharing half of their meager food with Mai, who reluctantly eats. After finishing, Trunks informs her that they only have enough energy for a one-way trip back in time. They prepare to leave for Capsule Corporation, sharing a smile as they watch the kitten depart before hurrying off together.

Unable to sense Black's presence, Trunks and Mai cautiously approach the ruined Capsule Corporation. Suddenly, Black appears before them. Trunks urges Mai to go ahead, passing her the energy as he draws his sword to confront Black. In a brief clash, Trunks is overwhelmed by Black's mysterious powers, and Mai rushes to his aid. She sacrifices herself as a decoy, insisting that Trunks must survive, and is gravely injured by Black. Holding Mai's unconscious form, Trunks seethes with fury as Black descends, declaring that the day of reckoning has arrived for him.

Clutching Mai's hand tightly, Trunks quickly formulated a plan. He realized that Capsule Corp was still intact and that Goku Black remained unaware of the Time Machine's existence. Distracting Black, Trunks confronted him head-on, driven by fury over Black's taunts about Mai's supposed death. The two engaged in a fierce battle, with Trunks using his sword to block Black's ki blasts and momentarily blinding him with a Masenko. Seizing the opportunity, Trunks made a swift retreat to his time machine, narrowly escaping from the future just as Black unleashed a devastating Black Kamehameha.

Future Trunks successfully evaded Black and traveled back 16 years into the past, from Age 796 to Age 780. His arrival was discovered by a woman who found his time machine and located him unconscious inside. He was swiftly transported on a gurney, where Present Trunks and Bulma anxiously awaited his awakening, joined by Vegeta and Goku, all deeply concerned for his well-being. When Future Trunks finally regained consciousness, he was initially disoriented. Seeing Goku triggered intense PTSD, causing him to mistake Goku for Black and attempt to attack him in a fit of anger. Goku intervened swiftly, grabbing Future Trunks' arm to halt the assault. This snapped Future Trunks out of his trance, realizing that Goku had been revived long after he had returned to his future timeline.

Future Trunks then met his Present counterpart, who was surprised by his sudden appearance. Afterward, he retrieved his sword and caught sight of present-day Mai, adding to the surreal experience of his unexpected return to the past.

Bulma later provides an explanation about the Time Machine to everyone, while Future Trunks informs his present counterpart that their initial meeting occurred when the latter was just a baby. Future Trunks then encounters Beerus and Whis, discovering they hail from the divine realm where time travel is strictly prohibited under penalty of death. Bulma argues vehemently with them, foreseeing trouble due to her assertive nature. Trunks, mistaking Whis for a deity, earnestly pleads with him until Whis points out Beerus as the true God of Destruction. Trunks humbly begs Beerus for forgiveness, and after Bulma appeases him with delicious food, Beerus decides to overlook the transgression.

Later, when questioned about his reason for time traveling, Future Trunks discusses facing a new enemy. When Goku asks if it's related to Majin Buu, Future Trunks explains that he prevented Buu's emergence but now faces a foe who resembles Goku. He recounts the tragic events in his timeline, revealing that Future Bulma was killed by this man known as Goku Black. Intrigued by Future Trunks' strength, Goku proposes a sparring match, which Future Trunks accepts. They both power up to Super Saiyan 2, impressing each other, and Goku escalates to Super Saiyan 3. Concerned for the city's safety, Bulma erects a protective barrier around them so they can spar without causing collateral damage.

In their heightened states, Future Trunks attacks Goku with his sword, shattering the barrier with the force of his blow. However, Goku effortlessly catches the blade as a Super Saiyan 3 and dominates the match. Afterward, Goku helps Future Trunks to his feet, praising his power and acknowledging his impressive progress. Future Trunks is then approached by Krillin and Piccolo, who inquire about the events in his future timeline.

In the anime adaptation, a sudden thunderstorm materializes, and through a portal emerges Black, which deeply unsettles Future Trunks. His anger flares at Black's appearance in the past, ready to confront him, but Vegeta intervenes to halt the impending clash. Observing the battle between Super Saiyan 2 Goku and Black, Future Trunks questions why Goku doesn't unleash his full power, prompting Vegeta to explain Goku's tendency to hold back initially. As the confrontation concludes, Black is abruptly pulled back into the future, devastatingly destroying the Time Machine in the process. Stranded in the past without a means to return to his timeline, Future Trunks learns from Whis and Beerus about the Time Ring, which is exclusively used by Supreme Kais. When Trunks requests one, Beerus informs him of its restricted access.

Bulma discovers a capsule containing the Time Machine that Cell used to travel from the future. Future Trunks recalls that before returning to his timeline after defeating Cell, he had given the capsule to Bulma, who had stored it away and forgotten about it over the years.

Meeting present-day Mai, Future Trunks reveals details about her future counterpart, who led the resistance against Black. Goku interrupts the conversation, suggesting Future Trunks rest since he has been pushing himself since arriving in the present timeline. Future Trunks attempts to nap but is plagued by nightmares of Black. Upon waking, he checks on the Time Machine's progress, surprised to learn from Bulma that she has already secured the necessary fuel for its operation. Outside, as Krillin and Piccolo clean up the aftermath of the battle, Future Trunks inquires about Gohan's whereabouts, considering taking him to the future as well. Piccolo dissuades Trunks, noting that Gohan isn't as formidable as he once was, stating that "he's not the same Gohan he knew."

In the anime, Future Trunks pays a visit to Gohan during his conference, and they share ice cream together. Future Trunks is taken aback and somewhat disappointed by Gohan's current power, feeling like he doesn't recognize him at all. Gohan invites him to meet his family, and they travel to Gohan's house where Future Trunks meets Videl, Mr. Satan, and Gohan's daughter, Pan. While waiting for Gohan to finish his work and Videl to prepare dinner, Future Trunks babysits Pan. He finds himself wondering why he's there doing nothing, and a playful tug-of-war ensues between Pan and Future Trunks over his sword until Gohan intervenes.

Later, Future Trunks, Gohan, and Pan go outside, where they discuss parenting strategies. Gohan admits he should be stricter with Pan but confesses he gets "soft" whenever he looks at her. Seeing Gohan playing with Pan triggers a vision in Future Trunks of what his future could have been like if Black hadn't appeared. He realizes his purpose in fighting Black is to ensure the people of his future can live happily, similar to Gohan and his family. This realization helps him begin to lighten up after the traumatic events he has witnessed.

Upon returning to Capsule Corp, Future Trunks accidentally bumps into Krillin, and they engage in conversation. Krillin nervously suggests introducing Future Trunks to his wife and child. Future Trunks eagerly agrees, but their reunion is interrupted when Android 18 unexpectedly approaches them. Future Trunks instantly recognizes her from his timeline and prepares to draw his sword, believing she is still a threat. Krillin quickly intervenes and reveals that Android 18 is his wife now.

Initially shocked and confused, Future Trunks learns that Android 18 and Krillin even have a child together, which surprises him further. Android 18 playfully punches Future Trunks in greeting, easing his anxiety. She jokes about him destroying her future counterpart and demands he make amends, though she quickly reassures him it's all in jest. Future Trunks watches them happily together as a family, feeling slightly awkward, before heading off to check on his mother.

In the anime, the following day, Vegeta takes Future Trunks into the forest for training. Trunks powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and challenges Vegeta to achieve Super Saiyan 3 like Goku did. Vegeta instead surprises him by transforming into Super Saiyan Blue, initially confusing Trunks. Trunks quickly deduces that Super Saiyan Blue harnesses godly energy, realizing both Goku and Vegeta utilize this powerful form. He believes that together, they can easily stop Black.

Vegeta taunts Trunks and proposes a bet: if Trunks can land a hit on him, Vegeta will concede defeat. Trunks responds by pushing his Super Saiyan 2 form to its limit, transforming into Super Saiyan Third Grade for a massive power increase. Vegeta mocks this transformation as primitive and attacks, moving rapidly to confuse Trunks.

However, Future Trunks anticipates his father's movements and at the last moment, powers back down to Super Saiyan 2 to counterattack. He manages to push back against Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, surprising him with his strategy. Vegeta quickly regains control of the fight, overwhelming Trunks with his attacks. Trunks holds his ground for a while but is eventually kicked through the forest and into a cliff.

Just as Trunks seems defeated and reverts to his base form, Goku and Bulma arrive using Instant Transmission. Vegeta lifts Trunks by his shirt, continuing to mock him and challenging him to aim higher than just defeating Black—to become the strongest in the universe. Bulma tries to intervene, but Goku stops her, sensing the fight isn't over.

Thinking he's won, Vegeta lowers his guard, only for Future Trunks to suddenly spring to life. He reveals he isn't hurt at all and headbutts Vegeta to the ground. Future Trunks laughs triumphantly, asserting his victory over Vegeta. He offers to help Vegeta up, but Vegeta refuses and storms off. Future Trunks bows to his father, reaffirming his determination not only to defeat Black but to surpass him.

In the manga, these events unfold differently: Black never destroys Trunks' time machine as he did in the anime. The Z Fighters patiently wait for Future Trunks' time machine to be refueled, passing the time playing a racing video game where Future Trunks finishes in second place. Afterward, Future Trunks trains with Vegeta in a gravity chamber.

Once the Time Machine is repaired, Future Trunks expresses his gratitude to everyone. He, along with Vegeta and Goku, then travels to the future. Upon arrival, Future Trunks discovers Future Mai's hat. When the resistance mistakes Goku for Black and fires at him, Future Trunks clarifies that Goku is not their enemy. They learn of Future Mai's survival and meet other survivors of Black's attacks, including Future Yajirobe. The trio, along with Mai, then ventures outside, embarking on their mission to find Black.

Future Trunks, Goku, and Vegeta lure Black to their location. Future Trunks observes as Vegeta battles Goku Black in his Super Saiyan Blue form, but is taken aback when Goku Black transforms into Super Saiyan Rosé and easily overpowers Vegeta. Future Trunks is further surprised to encounter Future Zamasu and questions their relationship if they are not the same person. Joining forces with Super Saiyan Blue Goku, Future Trunks engages in the battle, but they ultimately face defeat upon learning of Future Zamasu's immortality. Fortunately, they are rescued by Future Mai and Earth's Resistance. Despite Future Trunks' objections, Future Mai insists they return to the past using the time machine. Upon their arrival in the present, they collapse from exhaustion.

Back in the present timeline, Future Trunks and the others discuss the challenges posed by Zamasu's immortality and Goku Black's formidable Super Saiyan Rosé form. They listen intently as Whis offers his theories on the matter. Feeling despondent and hopeless on a swing outside, Future Trunks is cheered up when his younger counterpart attempts to lift his spirits through a sparring session (though this was not shown on screen). Future Trunks appreciates Kid Trunks' effort to encourage him to persevere.

When Goku, Beerus, and Whis return with news of Zamasu's apparent demise, Future Trunks remains skeptical and suggests returning to the future to verify Beerus' theory. He confides in Kid Trunks about their divergent lives, detailing the deaths of Goku, Vegeta, and others, as well as the ongoing threat from the Androids. Future Trunks also clarifies that he hails from an alternate timeline, not their actual future. Future Trunks, Vegeta, Goku, and Bulma (who decides to join them this time) return to the future and are warmly welcomed by the resistance. They enter the resistance base where they reunite with the other members and refugees. Future Trunks learns that Future Mai was injured while trying to hold back Black. Immediately, he rushes to her side and administers a Senzu Bean to heal her, akin to CPR. After this brief moment, he joins Goku and Vegeta in confronting Black and Future Zamasu. To their astonishment, they discover that Black is not a creation of the Super Dragon Balls but another Zamasu who stole Goku's body. In the ensuing battle, Future Trunks expresses his determination to take on Black, who accuses him of being a catalyst for their mission to eliminate all mortals by his use of the time machine. Black openly admits that without Future Trunks, he would never have sought out Goku's body, branding him a sinner. Enraged by these accusations, Future Trunks attacks Black, initially in his Super Saiyan 2 form, but is swiftly overwhelmed and knocked to the ground.

Driven by anger, Future Trunks rises again and undergoes a transformation never seen before, shocking everyone present. With a fierce determination, he marches towards Black, declaring his intent to kill him. Engaging in battle once more, Future Trunks fights Black and Future Zamasu with relentless fury. Although initially overwhelmed by their teamwork, his rage gradually subsides, allowing him to hold his own against both adversaries simultaneously.

Eventually, Future Trunks lands on the ground and instructs Vegeta and the others to escape using the time machine to find a way to defeat Black and Zamasu, while he covers their retreat. Vegeta carries Goku and gives Mai the remaining Senzu Beans, while Bulma initiates the time machine's departure. Future Trunks manages to prevent Black from destroying the time machine as it vanishes, then continues to battle fiercely against them. Despite his relentless efforts, Future Trunks eventually succumbs to the overwhelming power of Black and Future Zamasu, but is rescued in time by Mai. After regaining consciousness and receiving a Senzu Bean from Future Yajirobe, Future Trunks leaps into action to save Future Mai. She had attempted to assassinate Black but was targeted by a combined blast from both adversaries. Future Trunks swiftly devises a strategy to separate the immortal Future Zamasu from Black, successfully executing it and leaving Black to face him alone in a sword duel. During their intense battle, Black belittles Future Trunks' sword as ineffective, appearing to dominate the fight. However, Future Trunks surprises him by throwing the sword and following up with three devastating gut punches and a full-power Galick Gun. The blast propels Black through the forest, through his own hideout, and into a mountain, rendering him seemingly unconscious.

As Future Trunks prepares to regroup, Future Zamasu returns with renewed determination to kill him. Knowing he has only one chance left, Future Trunks feigns vulnerability before seizing Future Zamasu in a hold. Convinced that Future Zamasu's regeneration must have its limits, Future Trunks attempts a risky maneuver, appearing to initiate a self-destruct attack. However, before he can complete it, Black, who has recovered, intervenes and stabs Future Trunks from behind.

Just as Black and Future Zamasu prepare to deliver a fatal blow, Goku and Vegeta return from the past, drawing their attention away and allowing Future Mai to rescue Trunks. After recovering, Future Trunks accompanies Future Mai to Bulma, who instructs him to repair the Evil Containment Wave jar with super glue, teasing him about his skill with puzzles.

Future Trunks successfully repairs the jar and learns the sealing technique, while Bulma distracts Zamasu to buy time. Afterward, he and Future Mai rush out and witness Zamasu lifting Bulma by her coat, reminiscent of how Black had held Future Bulma. Future Trunks powers up and attempts to use the sealing technique on Zamasu, seemingly successful until they realize Goku forgot to include the amulet seal, allowing Zamasu to break free. Trunks and the others look on in dismay as Black and Future Zamasu fuse using the Potara earrings.

Facing the merged Zamasu alongside Goku and Vegeta, Future Trunks witnesses their defeat and unleashes his newfound super form. Charging in, he confronts the dark deity but struggles against his overwhelming power. Driven by his determination to protect his world and its people, Future Trunks gathers his energy and unleashes a powerful Galick Gun. The fused entity responds with a counter ki blast, and Future Trunks finds himself losing ground in the beam clash until Vegeta intervenes with his own Galick Gun. Together, they manage to overpower the evil Shinjin-Saiyan hybrid, but both collapse from exhaustion, proud of their apparent victory.

Their defiance only serves to enrage Fused Zamasu further. Witnessing Vegeta take a direct hit from the fused god's Lightning of Judgement, Future Trunks watches as Goku retaliates with a powerful Kamehameha wave against their formidable enemy.

While observing the clash between Vegito Blue and Fused Zamasu, Future Trunks receives a crucial revelation from Gowasu: the fusion of Goku Black and Future Zamasu is inherently unstable. Though the body may be immortal, the conflicting souls within are causing the fusion to unravel. As the battle intensifies, Bulma and Future Mai return with the time machine and what remains of Future Trunks's shattered sword. Gazing at the broken blade, Future Trunks begins to hear the voices of encouragement from everyone around him, urging him not to give up.

Inspired and filled with renewed determination, Future Trunks channels his ki through the remnants of his sword, forming a long, golden blade of energy. Rearmed with this newfound weapon, Future Trunks leaps into action, intervening just as Goku and Vegeta are saved from the aftermath of the fusion. With Fused Zamasu now separated and in turmoil, Future Trunks stands as humanity's final hope, engaging the formidable foe alone.

During their intense battle, Fused Zamasu taunts Future Trunks, ridiculing his "mortal weakness" and questioning where he can turn for aid now, in either the past or future. Unfazed, Future Trunks declares he is unashamed of his mortality and is driven solely by his desire to protect everyone. As his allies fervently pray for his victory, their collective energy unconsciously gathers into a massive orb of light.

Witnessing this phenomenon and understanding its significance, Future Trunks flies directly into the radiant sphere, absorbing its potent energy. His blade transforms into a colossal great sword forged from the light energy, elevating him to the level of Fused Zamasu. Calling out for everyone to lend him their strength, Future Trunks is further empowered as Goku and Vegeta awaken and contribute their remaining power to him.

Now enveloped in a brilliant aura of light energy, Future Trunks shatters Fused Zamasu's ki blade and delivers a decisive blow. With a resolute strike, he pierces through the once-immortal god, defying Fused Zamasu's last claims of superiority. The empowered blade cleaves through Fused Zamasu, severing him in half and bringing an end to the reign of the fallen deity once and for all.

After Future Trunks, Goku, and Vegeta failed to stop him, Zamasu transcended his physical form to merge with the universe itself. Despite their efforts, the mad Kaioshin unleashed a devastating barrage of energy beams from the sky, targeting all remaining Earthlings. Only a handful including Future Trunks, Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Future Mai, Shin, and Gowasu survived the onslaught.

With disbelief and desperation, Future Trunks and the others witnessed Goku summon Future Zeno using a button. As Shin and Gowasu bowed before him, Future Trunks, unfamiliar with Future Zeno, learned from Bulma that he was the supreme deity of the universe.

When Goku proposed that Future Zeno erase Zamasu, the divine being agreed but decided to annihilate the entire future world as well. In a frantic rush, Goku warned everyone to flee and activate the time machine. Barely escaping, the group watched as Zeno obliterated Zamasu and the entire future multiverse.

Returning to the present timeline, Future Trunks explained that his world was now gone. He and Goku had retrieved Future Zeno to prevent further catastrophe. Whis and Beerus arrived, and Whis informed Future Trunks that he would travel to the future to advise Future Beerus to eliminate Future Zamasu, thus averting his dark ambitions and ensuring the survival of another version of Future Trunks and Future Mai in that timeline. Both Future survivors agreed, preparing to embark on a journey to a new future where everyone could still live.

In a lighthearted moment, Bulma teased Future Trunks and Future Mai about her future self becoming a grandmother, causing them both to blush with embarrassment.

In the anime, Future Trunks and Future Mai bid their farewells, preparing to board the time machine for the new timeline. Just before they vanish, Vegeta tests Future Trunks' newfound strength with a surprise attack, proud as his son successfully blocks it. As they are about to depart, Piccolo and Gohan arrive to see them off. Gohan's presence evokes tearful memories in Future Trunks of his late mentor, Future Gohan. However, Gohan's optimistic words uplift Future Trunks, filling him with hope as he looks forward to reuniting with everyone in the new timeline.

In the manga side story following the "Future" Trunks Saga, Gohan confides in Bulma after Trunks' departure, expressing his desire to visit Future Bulma and experience life in the new future world they were headed towards. Bulma reassures Gohan that he can still make the trip, revealing that she has duplicates of the time machine and can create one for him. Unbeknownst to both Bulma and Gohan, Future Trunks originally intended to remain in the present world, and it was his conversation with Gohan that ultimately influenced his decision to embark on a journey back to a different future.

Universal Survival Saga[edit | edit source]

In the manga, as the Tournament of Power was about to commence, Goku expressed disappointment that Future Trunks had already departed, wishing he could have recruited him to join Team Universe 7.

Film Appearances[edit | edit source]

Super Android 13[edit | edit source]

In "Super Android 13!", Future Trunks reluctantly accompanies Krillin, Oolong, and Master Roshi to a swimsuit runway event, where they end up waiting due to a mix-up in dates. They later join Goku, Gohan, and Chi-Chi at a tower restaurant. However, their leisurely outing is interrupted when Androids 14 and 15 bomb the area, targeting Goku. Future Trunks assists in evacuating people and later follows Goku to an Arctic area to defend him against the Androids.

During the battle, Future Trunks faces Androids 14 and 15 alone and struggles in the two-on-one fight. He turns Super Saiyan to gain an advantage, eventually slicing Android 14 in half, albeit with a delayed effect. Later, when Super Android 13 appears and threatens the Z Fighters, Future Trunks attempts to save Vegeta from the android's attack but is knocked away. He joins Goku in distracting Super Android 13 so Goku can gather energy for a Spirit Bomb. Despite his efforts, Super Android 13 shatters Future Trunks' sword and defeats him.

After Super Android 13's destruction, Future Trunks is hospitalized along with the other Z Fighters due to injuries sustained during the battle.

Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan[edit | edit source]

Future Trunks attends the hanami picnic, where he witnesses Krillin's cringe-worthy attempt at karaoke, shocked that anyone could consider it "good." Later, when Paragus arrives on Earth and urges Vegeta to become king of the revived Saiyan Empire and help the South Area by defeating the Legendary Super Saiyan, Future Trunks voices his suspicions. He tries to persuade Vegeta not to go, but his warnings fall on deaf ears. Reluctantly, Future Trunks accompanies Paragus to New Planet Vegeta in a further attempt to dissuade his father.

On New Planet Vegeta, while scouting the city ruins with Krillin and Gohan, they uncover Paragus' use of slave labor to build the palace. Future Trunks intervenes to stop guards from mistreating a Shamoian slave and later provides food for the starving Shamoians in exchange for information. They discover that the Legendary Super Saiyan does exist and was responsible for destroying their homeworld.

The following morning, Future Trunks, Gohan, Krillin, and Master Roshi confront Vegeta with evidence of Paragus' deception and the plight of the enslaved Shamoians. When Broly, Paragus' son, transforms into the Legendary Super Saiyan and attacks, Future Trunks marvels at his overwhelming power but quickly focuses on defending against the threat. Despite his efforts, he fails to convince his terrified father to join in stopping Broly.

After Broly goes berserk, Future Trunks rushes to aid Goku and Gohan, quickly arriving at their location and transforming into his Super Saiyan Second Grade form. Despite their combined efforts, they prove no match for Broly's overwhelming power. Witnessing Broly's ruthless destruction of the slave's home planet, Future Trunks warns that allowing Broly to live would threaten the entire universe. The battle continues fiercely, but Future Trunks is soon overpowered, being thrown into a wall and later smashed into a railway by Broly.

Piccolo arrives and provides Senzu Beans to Future Trunks, revitalizing him to continue the fight alongside Gohan. They attempt a Combined Masenko attack on Broly, but it proves ineffective as Broly brushes off the assault and emerges unscathed from the building's fall.

Subsequently, Future Trunks and Gohan are knocked back by Broly's attack, while Broly engages Piccolo and sends him flying with a powerful blast. Future Trunks briefly cheers as Vegeta joins the battle, only to rush to his father's aid when Broly strikes Vegeta. He then contributes his ki energy along with other Z Fighters in a final effort to stop Broly, which ultimately succeeds. Barely escaping the destruction of New Planet Vegeta from Comet Camori, Future Trunks and the others manage to survive.

Bojack Unbound[edit | edit source]

Future Trunks took part in X.S. Cash's Intergalactic World Tournament alongside Gohan, Krillin, Tien, and Piccolo. During a conversation with Chi-Chi, Bulma mentions that Trunks returned to the past one last time specifically to compete in the tournament. In the semi-finals, he faces Tien, promising not to hold back. Their battle is evenly matched, with Tien landing a solid right hook to Trunks' face. However, Trunks ultimately defeats Tien by transforming into a Super Saiyan. This victory propels Future Trunks into the tournament finals alongside Doskoi, Gohan, and Krillin.

In his Battle Zone, Future Trunks encounters a formidable alien named Kogu. Initially struggling against the swordsman, Trunks turns the tide by transforming into a Super Saiyan and swiftly defeats Kogu with a powerful punch to the gut.

Later, Future Trunks is unexpectedly knocked out by a kick from a mysterious warrior, revealed to be Bojack. He regains consciousness while Gohan battles Bojack's henchmen and joins the fight after Piccolo is defeated. During the intense battle, he narrowly avoids death thanks to the intervention of his father, Vegeta. Future Trunks faces Zangya while Vegeta contends with a transformed Bojack. Unfortunately, Future Trunks is eventually defeated by Bojack, who launches an energy sphere into his stomach.

After the battle concludes, Future Trunks is seen in the hospital with the other Z Fighters during the movie's epilogue.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Like the rest of his family (excluding Vegeta), Trunks' name is a pun based on an undergarment.
  • Bruce Faulconer, the composer for the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z, stated on his website that Future Trunks is his favorite character from the series. Christopher Sabat, the American voice actor for Vegeta, also shares this sentiment, appreciating how Trunks is depicted as the lone survivor of an apocalypse, the son of fiercely determined characters. Sabat particularly enjoys Future Trunks' notable battles, such as his swift defeat of Frieza and King Cold.
  • Despite official statements indicating that Goku was responsible for defeating Frieza and King Cold in both the main timeline and Future Trunks' timeline, Cell implies that Future Trunks played a pivotal role in their downfall in his own timeline. This revelation occurs during Cell's discussion with Piccolo about his origins and the genetic components he inherited.
  • Both Trunks and his father, Vegeta, were killed by a Death Beam through the chest from significant antagonists. Vegeta was struck by Frieza's regular Death Beam, while Trunks faced Cell's Full Power Death Beam.
  • In the Character Illustrations section of the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series, it is mentioned that Future Trunks obtained his sword from Tapion. However, this conflicts with other official sources discussing its origin. Moreover, in Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3, Trunks and Tapion recognize each other if they fight, with Trunks even greeting Tapion with "Long time, no see."
  • Due to time travel, Future Trunks exists in multiple incarnations and timelines beyond his main timeline counterpart. Notably, the Future Trunks from Cell's Timeline played a crucial role in causing distortions across various timelines. The Future Trunks from Cell's Timeline was killed by Cell in his effort to prevent the Androids' devastation. Future Trunks from Dragon Ball Super witnessed his timeline devastated by Fused Zamasu and ultimately erased by Future Zeno. He and Future Mai were relocated to the new timeline created when Whis warned Future Beerus. Another Future Trunks exists in the Future Timeline created by Whis' warning to Future Beerus. He lives with his timeline's Future Mai and shares this timeline with counterparts from the erased Future Timeline. In the Xenoverse series, it is suggested that this particular Future Trunks (known as Time Patrol Trunks) might eventually be recruited by Chronoa to serve as her attendant and work to defend history as a member of the Time Patrol. However, in Xenoverse 2's 4th DLC Pack, it's revealed that Time Patrol Trunks has no memory of encountering a second version of himself, indicating they may never have met despite their coexistence in different timelines.
  • In "Kakarot," upon meeting Future Shin and Future Kibito for the first time, Future Trunks briefly worries that they might be undiscovered Red Ribbon Androids. This concern arises when Future Shin addresses him by name and demonstrates awareness of his ability to use Flight. This shows that Future Trunks remains vigilant against the possibility of encountering more Android threats in his timeline. These could potentially arise from Future Dr. Gero's Supercomputer following the failure of Future Cell, or from older models that might be activated in the future to wreak havoc. Additionally, Bandai Namco claimed in a Tweet that Future Trunks' birthday is on November 21st.
