Might makes right and might alone! Without strength, we have NOTHING! If I don't win, then all my effort... all I've struggled to achieve, all of it will have been pointless! I'll lose everything, just like I did before! And I absolutely refuse to go through that again!! I cannot... I WILL not!!

Jiren, (ジレン Jiren), also known as Jiren the Gray (灰色のジレン Haiiro no Jiren) is the most powerful member of the Pride Troopers and one of the strongest mortals across all universes in the Dragon Ball Multiverse. His character was introduced in the Universe Survival Saga, where he played a key role as the main fighting antagonist and a major participant in the Tournament of Power.

Concept and Creation:[edit | edit source]

  • Name Origin: Jiren's name is derived from the Japanese word for "stove" (renji).
  • Personality Shift: Initially, Jiren was supposed to have a more outspoken personality, but Akira Toriyama decided to make him a quiet individual with a tragic backstory. His original personality was instead given to Toppo, another Pride Trooper.
  • Debut Changes: Jiren was originally set to debut in episode 78 and was even shown in the preview, but was later replaced by Toppo in the final version. He was also supposed to fight Goku in episode 82, and a statement about this fight mistakenly remained in the episode synopsis.

Appearance:[edit | edit source]

Jiren is a tall, muscular humanoid with a sleek head similar to the "Greys" from folklore. He has gray skin, black eyes with enlarged pupils, flat round ears, and a barely visible nose. He wears the Pride Troopers' uniform: a red spandex suit with black sections, white gloves, and boots.

Personality:[edit | edit source]

  • Justice and Duty: Jiren is deeply committed to justice and protecting Universe 11. He initially refused to join the Tournament of Power because he didn’t want to cause the destruction of other universes to save his own.
  • Solitary Nature: He often fights alone, rarely relying on teamwork, due to his belief in his own strength. His stoic demeanor hides a deeply rooted fear of loss, stemming from a traumatic past where his loved ones were murdered, and those he trusted betrayed him.
  • Honor and Respect: Jiren respects strong opponents who exceed his expectations but shows disdain for those who betray their values or fail to impress him. Despite his arrogance, he recognizes the value of bonds with others, especially after his interactions with Goku during the tournament.
  • Growth: Over time, Jiren begins to change, learning to value trust and connections with others. This evolution is highlighted after his defeat, where he starts to build bonds with his fellow Pride Troopers and prepares to grow stronger for future challenges.

In the manga, Jiren is portrayed with more heroic traits. He is even more devoted to justice, refusing to let any villains die and prioritizing the protection of Universe 11 over winning the Tournament of Power. His wish is to resurrect his master, Gicchin, who was killed by the same person who murdered his parents. The manga also highlights his respect for his fallen master’s teachings, which emphasized fighting with one's life on the line.

Alternate Media:[edit | edit source]

  • Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2: Jiren's personality is more bombastic and aligned with classical superhero archetypes, resembling what his character was initially planned to be before Toriyama’s revisions. After the Tournament of Power, Jiren becomes more sociable and friendly, reflecting his personal growth.
  • Super Dragon Ball Heroes: In this version, Jiren becomes more trusting and friendly towards others, showing gratitude and a willingness to work with allies like Hit, Goku, and Vegeta.

Jiren's character development across different media showcases his evolution from a solitary warrior driven by past trauma to someone who begins to understand the value of trust and teamwork.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

In the anime, Jiren’s backstory reveals that as a child, he returned home to find his parents slain by a villain. Gicchin, who would become his teacher, saved him and took him in to train him. Jiren later fought alongside Gicchin's other students to defeat the villain, but most of his allies, including Gicchin, perished. Disillusioned, Jiren's remaining friends gave up, but he chose to continue training alone, no longer trusting in others and believing only in the power of strength. To Jiren, strength is justice and absolute, which attracted the attention of Belmod. He lived in solitude until he joined the Pride Troopers.

In the manga, Jiren was encouraged to join the Pride Troopers by his master Gicchin, who later died at the hands of a monster. Without receiving his master’s approval, Jiren continued to pursue strength on his own, not understanding that his master’s intent was to teach him the value of teamwork. Despite this, Jiren worked tirelessly as a Pride Trooper, protecting lives across his universe and never killing his enemies. His power eventually surpassed that of a God of Destruction, but he showed no interest in becoming one, leaving Toppo as the candidate for Universe 11. Jiren's wish was to resurrect his former master, a goal he was determined to achieve at any cost.

Jiren’s reputation grew to the point where his existence became a rumor across other universes, known as the only mortal a God of Destruction could not defeat.

Dragon Ball Super:[edit | edit source]

Universe Survival Saga[edit | edit source]

Jiren, alongside his fellow Pride Troopers, was chosen to represent Universe 11 in the Tournament of Power. In the anime, during Universe 7’s team selection, Jiren was one of the foes seen by Old Kai. He was shown meditating before the tournament began.

In the manga, Jiren was on Planet Towale handling a prison riot when he was called to join the Tournament of Power. Initially refusing to participate, Jiren agreed to join after Belmod promised that winning the tournament would grant him his wish, on the condition that he could return to Universe 11 if needed.

At the tournament, Jiren remained serious and focused, fully aware of the stakes. When Goku greeted him, Jiren coldly told him to get lost, moving so fast that Goku couldn’t track his movements. As the Gods of Destruction reconstructed the arena, Jiren calmly analyzed the movements of the Katchi Katchin blocks and remained unmoved, impressing Goku.

Throughout the tournament, Jiren demonstrated his overwhelming power. He scared off opponents like Rabanra with a single look, defeated Kale with one attack, and engaged in a series of battles, including against Goku and Hit. Jiren’s strength was so immense that he could repel Goku Spirit Bomb with minimal effort, ultimately causing it to implode and engulf Goku in the explosion.

As the smoke clears, it initially appears that Jiren has won, with Goku seemingly vaporized by his own Spirit Bomb. However, Goku re-emerges in the state of Ultra Instinct Sign, surprising everyone. In this form, Goku launches a sudden attack on Jiren, who is the only one of the three Pride Troopers present who sees it coming and dodges. Goku and Jiren exchange blows, with Goku successfully dodging most of Jiren's attacks. Toppo and Dyspo attempt to intervene, but Jiren signals to Toppo to let him handle it alone. Goku, in his Ultra Instinct state, manages to push Jiren back but cannot deal any significant damage due to the incomplete nature of the form. Eventually, Goku's power wanes, and Jiren takes advantage of this by blasting him aside with a Power Impact, severely wounding him.

Hit seizes the opportunity to attack Jiren, but Jiren easily counters Hit's moves, including his Time-Skip ability, shocking both Hit and Champa. Although Hit manages to land a paralyzing attack on Jiren, Jiren gradually overcomes it. In a final attempt to defeat Jiren, Hit goes for a decisive strike, but Jiren neutralizes it with a glare, crushes the energy sphere, and frees himself from paralysis. After a brief struggle, Jiren eliminates Hit from the tournament with another powerful blow, sending him flying out of the ring. Confident that his primary opponents are defeated, Jiren begins meditating, even as other fighters like Biarra and Capresra fail to breach his energy barrier.

While meditating, Jiren senses Kefla's energy but remains uninterested in intervening. It's only when Goku reaches a new level in his Ultra Instinct Sign form that Jiren stops meditating, deciding it's time to fight again. He then watches as Team Universe 7 eliminates Universes 2, 6, 4, and 3 from the tournament, with Toppo and Dyspo by his side.

In the manga, after controlling Kale's rampage, Jiren and Goku resume their battle. Frustrated by his lack of progress, Goku attempts to use the Blue Kaio-ken, but Jiren easily overpowers him. Master Roshi arrives and demonstrates the principles of Ultra Instinct to help Goku understand what he needs to do to improve. Roshi sacrifices himself to give Goku the chance to achieve Ultra Instinct Sign, allowing Goku to dodge Jiren's finishing blow. However, the power vanishes as quickly as it came, and Goku is knocked aside.

After the elimination of Universe 3 in the anime, Jiren and the remaining members of Universe 11 confront Team Universe 7. Jiren declares that no matter what they do, they will not win. The final battle begins with Jiren fighting a fully powered Super Saiyan Blue Goku, questioning why Goku seeks more strength. When Goku says he simply wants to get stronger, Jiren replies that he seeks what more strength has to offer.

Vegeta then joins the fight, initially landing no damage on Jiren. However, when Vegeta declares his intention to claim the Super Dragon Balls, Jiren becomes annoyed and knocks Vegeta aside. He continues to fight both Goku and Vegeta simultaneously, easily dodging their attacks. However, Vegeta, having observed Jiren's previous attack patterns, manages to land a devastating blow, shocking Jiren. Despite this, Jiren quickly regains the upper hand, nearly knocking Vegeta off the stage with a Power Impact.

Vegeta retaliates with a fully charged Final Flash, which Jiren blocks, appearing unscathed. Jiren then engulfs Vegeta in a massive orb of energy, knocking him out. After acknowledging Vegeta as a warrior, Jiren turns his attention back to Goku. Goku challenges him again, using Instant Transmission and Ki landmines in an attempt to outmaneuver Jiren. However, Jiren effortlessly avoids the traps and destroys Goku's Destructo Discs before pummeling him atop a collapsing platform. As Jiren prepares to eliminate Goku, Goku manages to counter and kick Jiren off the platform, but Jiren quickly recovers and returns to the ring.

Jiren continues to press forward, shrugging off Goku's Ki landmines and overwhelming him with relentless attacks. As Goku powers up to his maximum, Jiren begins to raise his power as well, effortlessly taking on Goku and Vegeta's combined attacks. Despite sensing Toppo's increased power after unleashing his God of Destruction Mode, Jiren remains focused on his own battle, noting that Toppo has "made up his mind."

As Toppo engages in battle with Frieza and Android 17, Jiren resumes his fight against Goku and Vegeta, inadvertently interrupting the confrontation between Toppo, 17, and Frieza. During the battle, Jiren grows frustrated by the persistence of his opponents and attempts to blast them with a Power Impact, which ends up striking both 17 and Frieza instead of Goku and Vegeta. Jiren lands next to Toppo, and as Vegeta prepares to attack him from behind, Jiren nods to Toppo, allowing the God of Destruction candidate to take on Vegeta, effectively separating the Universe 7 fighters from each other. When Vegeta ultimately eliminates Toppo, Jiren scolds him, calling him pathetic and expressing disappointment that Toppo abandoned his beliefs for power, unlike Vegeta, who stood by his principles and emerged victorious. After kicking Goku aside, Jiren commends Vegeta for defeating Toppo, but then smiles and begins to unleash his true power, shocking the remaining Universe 7 fighters.

Jiren releases his hidden power, causing everyone in the arena and stands to stare in awe and bewilderment. The two Zenos even note that Jiren seems to be on "fire." Vegeta declares that since Jiren is the last opponent, they will defeat him and win, but Jiren dismisses this notion, stating that they cannot beat him with the injuries they've sustained. The three Universe 7 fighters attack Jiren simultaneously, but the Pride Trooper effortlessly blocks and dodges their assaults. He knocks all three back before dodging several Ki blasts from Goku and using his energy to block a crossbeam attack from both Vegeta and Android 17. After blasting 17 with a Power Impact, Vegeta attacks Jiren, but the Pride Trooper easily blocks his blows and kicks him away, only to also fend off a flurry of attacks from Goku. In a fierce scuffle, Jiren knocks Vegeta back to his base form with an energy punch and similarly nullifies Goku's Kamehameha. Jiren is then unexpectedly struck by a surprise attack from Android 17, marking the first time Jiren's uniform is dirtied, and he is slightly injured. Enraged, Jiren attempts to attack 17, but the latter pushes him back with a barrage of Ki blasts. The Universe 7 fighters then launch a coordinated attack on Jiren, who counters by dispelling 17's beam while blocking Goku's Kamehameha and Vegeta's Final Flash simultaneously, though he briefly struggles against the assault. Jiren then unleashes a wide-range energy attack, knocking out all three fighters.

Jiren is suddenly attacked by an enraged Frieza, but the Pride Trooper effortlessly stops True Golden Frieza's attack with a glare and knocks him out with two solid punches. After Android 17 catches Jiren's attention, Belmod questions 17 about what he would do if he won the Super Dragon Balls. 17 answers and then directs the same question to Jiren, curious as to why someone as powerful as him would need a wish. Jiren confirms he is indeed after a specific wish, prompting Belmod to reveal Jiren's tragic past and his obsession with strength. Jiren silences Belmod and attacks 17, who muses that Jiren, lacking trust and companionship, likely only used the Pride Troopers to further his own goals. Jiren scoffs at 17's observations, declaring that only strength can achieve anything, including burying the past. Jiren then fires a colossal energy orb, intending to eliminate all three Universe 7 fighters. However, 17 manages to save Goku and Vegeta by creating a barrier that holds back the attack, and additional barriers around each of them. When 17 seemingly self-destructs to destroy the attack, Jiren faces no penalty and is now left to confront Goku and Vegeta. He tells the two Saiyans to be grateful for 17's sacrifice, which saved their "weak" lives. Goku, exhausted, collapses, leaving Vegeta to face Jiren alone.

As Vegeta and Jiren face off, Jiren finds 17's sacrifice to protect them ridiculous and declares that no matter how many weaklings gather against absolute strength, it is pointless. Vegeta tries to go Super Saiyan but is too exhausted, so he fights Jiren in his base form. Jiren easily defends himself against Vegeta's powerless attacks, berating him for his futile persistence. After knocking Vegeta to the ground, Jiren watches as Vegeta, inspired by memories of his family, stands back up and tells Jiren not to underestimate the Saiyans. Vegeta attacks again, but Jiren effortlessly dodges and delivers a heavy punch to Vegeta's face, leaving him with a swollen eye. Jiren then unleashes a series of punches at Vegeta before knocking him down, telling him he cannot win. Vegeta counters by saying that his loss doesn't matter as long as Universe 7 wins. He grabs Jiren's arm and tries to break it, but Jiren blasts him away with a flare of energy from his arm. Vegeta stands up once more, insisting the fight isn't over, only for Jiren to punch him off the remnants of the arena. However, Vegeta miraculously hangs on by his boot on the edge of the debris. Despite this, Vegeta continues to stand, now relying solely on willpower. Jiren, curious, asks what drives Vegeta to continue despite the odds. Vegeta responds that Jiren could never understand what it means to protect something. He attacks Jiren once more, blasting him with a Final Flash, but it does little to no damage. After catching one of Vegeta's punches, Jiren acknowledges Vegeta's great pride before declaring their fight is over and finally knocks Vegeta out of the arena, eliminating him. Before falling, Vegeta gives Goku the last of his energy to fight Jiren one last time.

Goku stands back up, revitalized by Vegeta's energy, and transforms into Super Saiyan Blue. Jiren, puzzled by the faith Goku's friends have in him, remarks that trust is meaningless. Goku disagrees, finding Jiren's perspective amusing, and attacks him. However, despite regaining his stamina, Goku's attacks are easily deflected by Jiren, who lands a heavy blow that reverts Goku to his base form. Undeterred, Goku continues to fight, but Jiren counters and pummels him relentlessly, driving them to the edge of the debris they stand on. Charging energy into his fist, Jiren prepares to finish Goku, but Goku suddenly dodges, surprising Jiren, who couldn't see him move. Goku has reactivated Ultra Instinct Sign for the third time, and effortlessly dodges Jiren's punches before landing a powerful blow to Jiren's stomach, causing the Pride Trooper to show visible signs of pain for the first time, shocking the spectators. Goku then powers up Ultra Instinct Sign, and he and Jiren prepare for their final battle.

Their fists collide, resulting in multiple explosions as they engage in a fierce exchange. Jiren dodges a powerful punch from Goku and counters with his own, which Goku evades. Jiren then dodges a mighty kick from Goku that demolishes the battleground around them. Jiren pushes Goku back with a glare before they exchange a flurry of high-speed punches. As Goku charges his Kamehameha, Jiren attempts to sToppo him with his Invisible Strikes, but fails. Goku fires his Kamehameha, obliterating the ground they stand on, but Jiren blocks the attack with his Power Impact. Toppo observes that after Jiren's first battle with Ultra Instinct Sign Goku and seeing it again against Kefla, Jiren was able to read and anticipate Goku's attack patterns. Jiren then unleashes a powerful blast that sends Goku flying, but Goku survives by creating a barrier with his Kamehameha. When Goku appears to be knocked out, Belmod orders Jiren to finish him off. Jiren charges energy into his fist and leaps forward for the final blow, only to be knocked back by a sudden burst of power from Goku. As they continue to fight, the spectators notice that their battle prowess is steadily growing, becoming faster and stronger with each exchange. Belmod and others begin to notice that the heat emanating from Goku is intensifying, even reaching the stands.

Belmod orders Jiren to stops wasting time and finish off Goku. In response, Jiren raises his power level even further and knocks Goku onto a slab of concrete, following up with a hail of rapid-fire punches. Goku shields himself from the assault, but the platform he stands on slowly crumbles under Jiren's power. Universe 11 anticipates their victory, but Toppo notices that shockwaves are being emitted from within the barrage, the same shockwaves that occur when Jiren and Goku's fists collide. Goku slowly starts to stand, punching through Jiren's attacks as the Pride Trooper continues to push forward. However, Goku completely nullifies the assault and redirects Jiren's attacks back at him, striking Jiren in the chest and causing him to reel back in great pain. Jiren lands on a pillar and observes Goku's increasing power, noting that with such a powerful strike and the intensifying heat, Goku is reaching his maximum power. For the first time, Jiren smiles and responds with his full power, unleashing a fiery aura so vast that it engulfs the entire arena. Jiren then prepares a colossal Power Impact, condensing it in his hand, and proclaims that this is where it all ends before firing.

However, to everyone's shock, including Jiren, the attack vanishes upon impact. Jiren slowly turns to see Goku enveloped in a brilliant white light, holding the attack before disintegrating it with a flick of his fingers. Jiren attempts to strike Goku, but the Saiyan suddenly appears in front of him, effortlessly evading the attack. Jiren is then bombarded by punches that nearly knock him off the pillar. He fires his Invisible Strikes, but Goku merely flicks them aside. Jiren launches himself at Goku, but Goku evades, and Jiren is again bombarded by a rapid flurry of punches, knocking him down from the pillar. Belmod and the others watch in intense shock as Goku, now in the Perfected Ultra Instinct state, descends toward Jiren.

As Jiren struggles to stand, Goku declares that their real battle is about to begin. Jiren looks up with increasing frustration and prepares to fight. Goku moves so fast that Jiren cannot see him at all, managing to nick Jiren's cheek, much to the latter's shock. Despite this, Jiren tells Goku not to get cocky just because he powered up, and they engage in battle. However, Jiren quickly finds himself outmatched by Goku's newfound intensity and speed, unable to land any hits while Goku effortlessly dodges and attacks simultaneously. After being knocked into several slabs of concrete by a powerful punch, Jiren grows increasingly angry, recalling his past failures and the reasons behind them. He proclaims that he will not and cannot lose, no matter what. Jiren then unleashes a fierce cry and powers up once more, shrouding himself in a blazing storm of intense fiery ki that engulfs the entire arena, shaking the World of Void so violently that even the spectators in the stands feel the pressure.

After Jiren's intense power-up, which set the entire arena ablaze, he approached Goku enveloped in a reddish aura similar to Ultra Instinct, with his Pride Trooper uniform completely blown off. Jiren launched a fierce attack, matching blows with Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku. During their struggle, Jiren pushed Goku back with a Power Impact and continued his relentless assault, firing a beam of energy at Goku, who countered with a Kamehameha. The two warriors clashed in a beam struggle, but Jiren overpowered Goku's attack, engulfing him in a massive explosion. Despite the onslaught, Goku survived and reengaged Jiren, leaving the Pride Trooper astonished at Goku's enduring power.

Goku struck Jiren with a knee to the stomach, but Jiren quickly retaliated by kicking Goku away. Goku responded with an energy blast, which Jiren blocked and deflected back at him. Jiren then knocked Goku down and unleashed a devastating beam of energy into his back, slamming him into the ground. However, Goku stood back up, much to Jiren's disbelief, who exclaimed that Goku should be out of stamina. Goku explained that his power came from the support of his friends and family, which angered Jiren, who dismissed such notions as meaningless.

The two resumed their battle, with Goku slowly overwhelming Jiren and sending him flying through the debris. Goku declared that his power came from the bonds with his loved ones, frustrating Jiren, whose views clashed with his own traumatic past. In a dishonorable move, Jiren aimed a Power Impact at Team Universe 7 in the stands, forcing Goku to deflect the blast. Jiren claimed that concepts like friendship, trust, and family could easily be erased, which drove Goku into a furious rage. Goku retaliated by delivering a massive punch to Jiren's face, overpowering him in their ensuing clash, and blasting him back into the ground with a powerful Kamehameha.

As Jiren lay on the ground, battered and bruised, he asked Goku why he didn't finish him off. Goku, despite his frustration, acknowledged Jiren's strength but said that he couldn't bring himself to deliver the final blow. When Jiren accepted defeat and prepared for the end, the extreme toll of Perfected Ultra Instinct caused Goku to collapse, with Jiren looking on in shock as Goku was ravaged by the after-effects. Belmod urgently ordered Jiren to finish off Goku, and after a moment of hesitation, Jiren complied, acknowledging Goku's power and admitting that he didn't want their battle to end this way. Just as Jiren was about to land the finishing blow, a kiai deflected Goku's path, keeping him onstage. Jiren turned to see Golden Frieza, and Android 17 emerged from the rubble, revealing that he had survived his self-destruction attack. The two warriors powered up alongside Goku to face Jiren.

Outnumbered, Jiren dismissed their attempts to defeat him as futile, especially since they brought Goku back to the stage in critical condition. Frieza countered, claiming Goku was just insurance, and declared that he would taste defeat by his hands. Enraged, Jiren attacked Android 17 and Frieza, with Frieza noticing that Jiren's usual stoic demeanor had cracked. After being taunted by Frieza, Jiren flew into a rage, pummeling him relentlessly. Frieza fought back with telekinesis, slamming two large slabs of concrete into Jiren, allowing Android 17 to tackle him and charge a ki blast while restraining him. Jiren, however, warned that the same trick wouldn't work twice. Android 17 formed a barrier around them and detonated it on Jiren. As the smoke cleared, Jiren fell to his knees, heavily injured, and seemingly defeated. Frieza prepared to finish him off with a Death Beam, but Toppo's words of encouragement reignited Jiren's spirit. Jiren unleashed a tremendous wave of power, forcing both Frieza and Android 17 to form a barrier to protect themselves. Jiren's energy was so intense that it threatened to break through their defenses.

Goku stepped in, strengthening the barrier with his own energy, which amused Jiren as he saw Goku standing before him once more. Jiren increased his power further, but the combined energy of Goku, Frieza, and Android 17 expanded the barrier outward, canceling out Jiren's attack. Unfazed, Jiren smirked and charged at Goku and Frieza. The three warriors engaged in a fierce battle, with Jiren even appearing to enjoy himself briefly. Goku and Frieza worked together to land powerful blows on Jiren, but despite the damage, the Pride Trooper retaliated with his Invisible Strikes and charged head-on towards Android 17. Goku tossed Frieza at Jiren, intending to take him out, but Jiren redirected the attack into the remains of the arena. Jiren smashed Frieza into the ground, ripping off part of his tail in the process. However, Goku and Frieza used their last bit of energy to push Jiren off the stage.

As Jiren was eliminated, he was astonished by Universe 7's power and the strength that trust provided. Goku and Frieza unleashed a final, powerful attack that eliminated both themselves and Jiren, finally defeating the Pride Trooper. As Jiren was sent to the stands, his team expressed gratitude for his efforts to save their universe, but Jiren, confused by their appreciation, asked why they were thankful when he had treated them with contempt. Goku reassured Jiren that despite the tournament's end, they both grew stronger through their battle, and he hoped to fight Jiren again someday. Initially perplexed, Jiren eventually smiled at Goku before being erased by the Zenos along with Universe 11.

In the manga, when Vegeta saw Goku achieve Ultra Instinct Sign, his competitive spirit drove him to evolve his Super Saiyan Blue state. With his newfound power, he briefly gained an edge over Jiren. However, this advantage was short-lived, as Jiren quickly overpowered Vegeta with just a few blows. Before Jiren could finish him, Dyspo and Toppo called for help as they were about to fall from the ring. This distraction allowed Goku to save Vegeta, much to Jiren's annoyance. Jiren then knocked down Frieza and Android 17 but refused to save Dyspo and Toppo, telling them to simply watch as he won.

Frieza unveiled his Golden form and challenged Jiren to an "ultimate battle," though Jiren quickly gained the upper hand. Realizing that Frieza was stalling for time, Jiren went to eliminate him, but Android 17 intervened at the last second. The two devised a plan, with Android 17 "self-destructing" in an attempt to take down Jiren. However, despite blowing up half the ring, Jiren remained standing. In response to 17's apparent sacrifice, Goku achieved Ultra Instinct Sign once more, this time more stable, prompting Jiren to activate his aura. The two began to fight, with Jiren initially holding the advantage. However, Goku quickly transitioned to Perfected Ultra Instinct, overwhelming Jiren and blasting him through the arena with a Kamehameha. Enraged by Goku's perceived lack of true strength, Jiren unleashed his full power, and the two fought evenly, their speed increasing to the point where Jiren could even grab Goku. Ultimately, Jiren's stamina outlasted Goku's Ultra Instinct, and it seemed he had won.

When Vegeta arrived to save Goku from falling, Jiren revealed that his wish was to resurrect his master, Gicchin, who had been slain by a monster. Though he refused to explain why, Toppo informed Dyspo that Jiren never received his master's approval before he passed away. As a final push, Vegeta agreed to team up with Goku, and the two fought the exhausted Jiren in sync, pushing him due to their flawless teamwork, unknowingly gained from their training with Whis. However, Jiren broke his limits and became even more powerful, charging through the duo's combined Gamma Burst Flash and Kamehameha attack, and knocked Vegeta out of the ring.

As Jiren prepared to push Goku out of the arena, Frieza intervened, flinging a Death Ball at both of them. Goku grabbed Jiren in a Full-Nelson, preventing him from dodging, but Jiren managed to deflect the Death Ball. However, this was a distraction, as Golden Frieza rammed into Jiren with his Nova Strike, knocking them both off the arena along with Goku. With no apparent winner, 17 emerged from the rubble, revealing that this was his and Frieza's plan all along. Jiren landed in the stands, where his teammates apologized for his failure to revive Gicchin. However, Jiren, having finally understood his master's teachings, was at peace. He and the rest of Universe 11 were then erased by the Omni-Kings. Shortly after, they and everyone else were revived by 17's wish.

In the anime, after Android 17 wished for all the erased universes to be restored, Jiren reflected on Goku's desire to see him again. He admitted that he couldn't form connections with anyone due to his past mistakes. Toppo, however, countered that Jiren's strength came not only from the praise of his power but also from the support he received from his comrades. Jiren, stunned by this realization, finally accepted that through friendship and trust, he could be truly strengthened. He promised that the next time he met Goku, he would win their battle.

Film Appearances[edit | edit source]

Broly[edit | edit source]

Jiren makes a cameo appearance when Goku mentions the Tournament of Power.

Super Hero[edit | edit source]

Jiren makes a brief appearance when Goku brings up to Vegeta all the strong warriors they need to train to surpass. Vegeta also briefly references Jiren and his being difficult to surpass during the tournament, where Vegeta theorized that Jiren's power gap between him and Goku wasn't as massive as previously thought and that he merely channeled his power to be utilized at just the right moment and decided he could see if he could do something similar by meditating.

Durability: Low Multiverse level | Low Multiverse level (Tanked hits from an enraged MUI Goku and survived an all-out Kamehameha from the latter while injured)

Stamina: Superhuman

Range: Standard Melee Range; Low Multiversal with ki-based attacks

Standard Equipment: None notable

Intelligence: Unknown in general. Genius in combat. As the strongest warrior of Universe 11, he is far more adept in combat than any of his fellow Universe 11 fighters, and possesses far more combat experience than all of them combined.

Weaknesses: His own pride, which keeps him from empathizing with others' desperation, including his teammates.

Tier: 2-C

Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Ki Manipulation (Master Level), Possibly Self-Sustenance (Type 1), Ki Sensing, Flight, Enhanced Senses, Reactive Evolution (Gradually adjusted to Ultra Instinct Goku's power to keep pace with him), Sealing and Transmutation (here), Dimensional Travel, Sound Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation and Portal Creation (At Buu saga levels of power he can create dimensional rifts and destroy space-time and pocket dimensions with his energy). Resistance to Matter Destruction, Soul Destruction, Deconstruction and Existence Erasure (Stated to be able to best Belmod in battle, and for them not to be able to beat him means he would have to resist the Power of Destruction to resist their attacks and bypass their Power of Destruction aura like Vegeta does). Possibly Space Survival (Resistance to Extreme Cold and Cosmic Radiations (Possibly able to survive in space, which is extremely cold[6][7] and filled with cosmic radiation))

Attack Potency: Low Multiverse level (Stated by Toppo to be superior to Belmod. Fought and matched Completed Ultra Instinct Goku, keeping pace long enough for Goku's Ultra Instinct to run out)

Speed: Massively FTL+ (Kept up with UI Goku. Surpassed Super Saiyan Blue Goku while he was using a Kaioken-like technique)

Lifting Strength: At least Class M (Far above Yuzun)

Striking Strength: Low Multiverse level

Durability: Low Multiverse level (Withstood attacks from UI Goku)

Stamina: Superhuman

Weaknesses: None notable

  1. Due to the vast amount of inconsistencies between various feats, statements, and information given about Time Skip, such as the mechanics explained by Vados and Whis, (that it is merely limited Time Travel that stores time) being directly contradicted on multiple occasions, including feats like freezing Goku in time (twice), Hit's own words, and Word of God, or what even qualifies as Time Skip, as Tides of Time (Hit's Dimension-Shift) was initially stated not to be, but this was contradicted later in the Tournament of Power, or regarding how Time Skip has a reliant Dimension connected to it for Time Storage contradicts Hit's testimony regarding how he never made Time Skip do more than its initial basic function before, (and the basic mechanics, as he needs to skip time first to then store it, contradicting even that description), etc. has created a patchwork of incoherence. Due to this, and how the Time Freezing and Travelling related parts of the ability must both be simultaneously true for the plot of the Dragon Ball Super Anime to make sense (as Vados/Whis explanation is the sole reason he has his greater Time Dimension abilities thoughout the Assassination Arc and the Tournament of Power, and he needs the abilities to also specifically be Time Stop for certain major plot sequences, like Time Cage, {a Time Stop ability which is explicitly described as "Time Skip in Reverse"} to affect Jiren), as well as the fact they are used interchangeably at several points, our community has decided to index the ability as both Time Travel and Time Stop, and to simply reconcile the best we can by ignoring these glaring contradictions to get the most accurate listing of Hit's ability. As such, Jiren's ability to get around these abilities will be indexed as they would be if this inconsistency did not exist. This includes resisting both time travel and stop.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the anime, Jiren's height seems inconsistent. In some scenes, he appears shorter than Toppo, while in others, they seem to be of similar height. Similarly, his height compared to Goku varies, with some scenes showing him slightly taller and others much taller.
  • Jiren is the second character in the anime to repel the Spirit Bomb, following Kid Buu. However, he is the first and only person to successfully deflect it back at Goku.
  • He is the third character to survive the Spirit Bomb, with Vegeta and Frieza being the first and second, respectively.
  • Jiren is the only character who voluntarily waited for the Spirit Bomb to fully charge, unlike others who either tried to interrupt it or were unaware of it until it was too late.
  • Jiren's first fight with Goku in the anime parallels Goku's battle with Frieza on Namek. Despite Goku using a X20 Kaio-ken, Jiren was superior without fighting seriously. Goku's last resort, the Spirit Bomb, failed, leaving Jiren unscathed, unlike Frieza. Following the failed Spirit Bomb, Goku awakened a new form (Ultra Instinct Sign), similar to how he first transformed into a Super Saiyan after Krillin's death.
  • Jiren's fight against Vegeta shares similarities with Vegeta's battle against Cell. Vegeta goaded Jiren to take his charged Final Flash head-on, leaving Vegeta momentarily victorious before Jiren quickly defeated him.
  • Jiren is the only member of Team Universe 11 known to have eliminated someone in the Tournament of Power. In the anime, he is also the only fighter outside of Team Universes 6 and 7 to eliminate more than one opponent, with three eliminations.
  • Jiren can be seen as a dark parallel to Goku. Both are orphans whose mentors died fighting demons, and both became their Universe's strongest fighters. However, Jiren focused solely on self-improvement due to the betrayal of his fellow students and the lack of Dragon Balls to revive his mentor, whereas Goku has always valued his friends, loved ones, and even trusted former enemies like Frieza.
  • Elements of Jiren's character arc resemble the planned characterization for Broly in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. Both are depicted as the absolute strongest in existence, but while Broly's character focused solely on power, Jiren's arc contrasts with Goku and Vegeta, who fight for someone or something.
  • Jiren bears a physical resemblance to the robot suit in Jiya.
  • Jiren made his video game debut as a playable character in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, appearing a few months before his proper debut in the anime series.
  • In Xenoverse 2, Jiren is a playable character as part of the Extra Pack 2 DLC. The Legendary Pack 2 DLC added Jiren (Full Power) as a playable character, and the 1.17.00 Update DLC includes a Customization Unlock Key 14, allowing customization of Jiren's skillset.
  • Jiren was the first DLC character in the FighterZ Season 2 Pass.
