Steve is the default male player character from Minecraft, introduced in the 2009 Java-based version of the game by its developer Markus "Notch" Persson. Along with his female counterpart, Alex (added in 2014), Steve is a customizable avatar with no specific backstory, intended for players to modify as they see fit. Steve's simple, blocky design has made him an iconic character in the video game industry, recognized as the mascot of the Minecraft franchise.

Following the game's massive success, Steve has been featured in various forms of Minecraft merchandise and media, including toys, apparel, and other collectibles. His likeness has also been used in unofficial content, such as the popular "Herobrine" creepypasta, which imagines a mysterious and haunting version of Steve in the game.

Steve's influence spread beyond Minecraft when he was added to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster in October 2020. Despite his popularity, Steve sparked controversy due to his overpowered abilities, leading to frequent bans in competitive tournaments for being imbalanced.

In total, Steve is one of nine default character skins, with more options introduced in 2022 to give players even more customization choices.

Concept and Creation[edit | edit source]

Steve, the Minecraft character, was designed by the game’s creator Markus "Notch" Persson and has a blocky, pixelated appearance consistent with the game’s aesthetic. His basic design includes a light blue shirt, blue trousers, and shoes, sometimes with a goatee. Though originally created as a joke due to his "generic" appearance, Steve became an official character in Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition. While Steve has traditionally been presented as male, Persson emphasized that Minecraft was designed to be gender-neutral, with Steve being more of an androgynous or genderless figure.

In response to concerns about gender representation, the character Alex was introduced in 2014, providing a more feminine alternative to Steve, with orange hair tied in a ponytail and narrower arms. Despite the aesthetic differences, Alex and Steve are functionally the same, reinforcing Minecraft’s stance on gender inclusivity.

An update in 2022 reintroduced Steve's goatee and added new textures to both Steve and Alex. Additionally, the game expanded its diversity with seven more default skins—Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai, and Efe—using the same base models but offering more representation within the game. This move aligned with Microsoft and Mojang’s efforts to promote equality and inclusivity in gaming.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Steve and Alex are the two default skins in Minecraft, each representing a customizable human figure. Steve has dark brown hair, dark skin, a nose and mouth, and blue eyes. He wears a light blue shirt that is untucked on the left side, blue jeans, gray shoes, and has 4-pixel wide arms, giving him a "classic" build.

Alex, on the other hand, features long, bright orange hair that hangs to the left side, pale white skin, and dark green eyes. She wears a light green shirt untucked on both sides with a dark green belt, brown pants, grayish boots, pinkish lips, and has slimmer 3-pixel wide arms, resulting in a "slim" skin.

Both Steve and Alex are designed to be gender-neutral representations of human beings, though the skins can be changed by players. In Minecraft’s Legacy Console Edition, players can also choose from seven other default skins beyond Steve and Alex, with additional skins available for purchase through various digital marketplaces.

In terms of size, the player character is 1.8 blocks tall in the game, with variations such as 1.5 blocks tall when sneaking, and 0.6 blocks tall when gliding or sprint-swimming. In Minecraft Legends, the characters adopt a more "chibi" appearance, with larger heads compared to their bodies, and are often seen mounted on their signature animals, like horses. The default hero, Ranger, in promotional materials is recognizable by their red hair and blue hood.

Personality[edit | edit source]

In Minecraft, the personality of the player characters is entirely determined by the individual controlling them. In Survival or Adventure Mode, players can choose to embody various traits such as kindness, bravery, and trust, or alternatively, they may opt for competitiveness, trickiness, or even arrogance. Depending on how players approach their world, they can show care and love by feeding pets or protecting villages, while also acting defensively against hostile mobs, performing heroic acts like slaying the Ender Dragon or rescuing villagers during raids. In multiplayer, players can form alliances, protect each other from threats, and work together to survive.

In Minecraft Legends, the Hero has a more defined personality. They are depicted as courageous, selfless, and driven by a desire to fight for the greater good. The Hero leaves their home to fend off a Piglin invasion, showing leadership by commanding troops and fighting for peace in the Overworld. Their willingness to face danger and protect villages emphasizes their heroism and determination to restore balance to the world.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Minecraft[edit | edit source]

In Minecraft’s Survival/Hardcore Mode, the player starts with nothing and is spawned in a vast, open world filled with dangers. Their first goal is to gather essential resources, hunt for food, and build a secure shelter to protect themselves from hostile mobs, such as Zombies, Creepers, and Skeletons, which appear primarily at night. As they explore, players collect resources from mining, crafting tools, and constructing buildings.

Throughout their journey, the player can tame animals like wolves, cats, and horses to serve as companions. In villages, they encounter villagers (formerly known as Testificates) and can trade for useful items or protect the village from zombie sieges or illager raids, earning the title "Hero of the Village."

Caves, dungeons, and other abandoned structures provide opportunities to find valuable resources like iron and, eventually, diamonds. Mining diamonds, once considered the ultimate goal, allows players to craft powerful tools and armor. Diamond pickaxes, in particular, enable players to mine obsidian and build a Nether Portal, giving access to the dangerous but resource-rich Nether dimension. Here, players may face Ghasts and other hostile entities, leading to new challenges.

In Minecraft, once players enter the Nether, they are met with a dangerous, hellish landscape filled with lava lakes and unique hostile mobs like Ghasts, Blazes, Magma Cubes, and Zombie Pigmen. A key structure in the Nether is the Nether Fortress, where players can defeat Blazes to collect Blaze Rods, an essential item for brewing and progressing in the game. Players may also fight Ghasts to obtain Ghast Tears for potion-making. After securing resources, they can use a portal to safely return to the Overworld.

To progress toward the endgame, players need to gather Ender Pearls from Endermen and craft Eyes of Ender. These Eyes guide them to the stronghold, where they can activate the End Portal. Entering the End dimension, they encounter the game's final boss, the Ender Dragon. The dragon must be defeated to unlock the game's final achievements and to gain the highest experience levels. Though players can bring companions like wolves or snow golems to the fight, they often recommend battling the dragon alone, as the companions are easily killed by the dragon and Endermen.

Defeating the Ender Dragon drops a significant amount of experience and unlocks an End Portal leading back to the Overworld. Players can also collect the Dragon Egg as a trophy. The endgame credits, along with an End Poem, roll after stepping through the portal.

Once the Ender Dragon is defeated, players can optionally pursue the game's next major challenge: the Wither. Summoning and defeating the Wither rewards the Nether Star, which is used to create a beacon—a powerful tool that offers beneficial effects. Players may also challenge themselves by exploring and conquering an Ocean Monument to defeat the Elder Guardian. These post-game tasks are nonlinear and completely optional, allowing players to continue shaping their worlds and achieving personal goals.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit | edit source]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Steve made his debut as part of Fighters Pass Vol. 2, announced on October 1, 2020, and released on October 13. He is classified as Fighter #77 and brings along alternate costumes for Alex, Zombie, and Enderman. Steve's moveset is heavily inspired by Minecraft, making him one of the most unique and complex characters on the roster.

Steve’s gameplay revolves around mining materials, which he uses to power his attacks. Iron is a crucial material, as it powers some of his most potent moves, like the Minecart and Anvil, both strong KO options. He can also place blocks on the battlefield, which can be used for a variety of strategies such as creating walls, extending combos, setting traps with TNT, or disrupting opponents.

Steve's strength lies in his stage control, swift attacks, and high damage output, particularly when using diamond tools. His Elytra and creative recovery options make him difficult to knock off the stage, but his weaknesses include poor mobility, short range, and reliance on managing resources. If Steve runs out of key materials, he can be left vulnerable. Despite these drawbacks, Steve is currently considered one of the top-tier characters in Ultimate, thanks to his versatility and powerful presence in competitive play

Attack Potency: Small Building level physically (Superior to, and can easily kill a Siverfish with their bare fists, who can violently fragment a whole cubic meter of stone, equivalent to 0.016 tons of TNT. Can destroy cubic meters of rock and wood over several punches), up to City Block level with Equipment (Can injure the Ender Dragon and the Wither, who can no-sell the explosion of a Charged Creeper, which can destroy 478 cubic meters of basalt), Can ignore conventional durability with Splash Potions (Instant Damage, Poison and Decay) and Thorn Enchantment (An enchantment that causes attackers to be damaged when they deal damage to the wearer, regardless of the type of attack or its range) | Likely High Universe level with the Nether Reactor (According to a WoG by Mojang, the Nether Reactor creates a "tear" in the world. This is backed up by a following statement saying how angry pigmen would emerge from the "rift"). At least Low Multiverse level via death in Hardcore Mode/Survival Test (If Steve dies in the Survival Test or in Hardcore Mode, the entire world is erased. And in Minecraft, "world" refers to a collection of universes of infinite size, as it contains other dimensions, including the Nether, the End and the Void plus many others like Redstonia, Boom Town, Sky City, Crown Mesa, the Mansion Dimension, etc...). | High Universe level (Can manipulate the entire world [one dimension at a time]. While nothing generates beyond 33 billion blocks, this is merely a game mechanic — implemented by the developers purely because a game-world simply can't be infinite in practice, but it can be in the lore — and the End Poem confirms it as infinite) | Multiverse level (Has all the powers of and can control the Command Block which can manipulate and edit all worlds and dimensions of Minecraft. While there's already one world containing four dimensions [the Overworld, Nether, End and Void, possibly five if one counts the Sky Dimension], there's also the various dimensions of Minecraft: Story Mode. In that game, there's also the Portal Hallway which, going by its shown length and the various portals, appears to contain countless dimensions, which are likely to co-exist with others of their kind as part of a world. The End Poem also mentions there being multitudinous other worlds, and the block can even power up beings to the state where they can destroy worlds. It can also cause cross-universal storms of potentially infinite size), possibly Multiverse level+ (Several statements in the End Poem imply that the amount of worlds Minecraft contains is never-ending, which would mean that Steve and the Command Block can manipulate an infinite amount of worlds)

Speed: Average Human movement speed (Can run at 5.61 m/s normally, and up to 7.12 m/s with sprinting and jumping), Athletic Human with Swiftness Potion (Able to sprint at 8 m/s under the effects of a potion), with Subsonic reactions and combat speed (Can easily hit Endermans, who can dodge 100 m/s arrows point-blank). Subsonic attack and flight speed with Equipment (Can fire arrows at 60 m/s in normal circumstances. Can fly at 33 m/s with the Elytra), Superhuman movement speed with Horses (A horse's maximum speed is 14.57 m/s)

Lifting Strength: At least Class 100 (Able to run and jump in full armor while holding solid blocks of gold), up to Class K with Equipment (Can create pistons capable of pushing up to 12 cubic meters of gold, equivalent to 231.6 tons)

Striking Strength: Small Building level physically, up to City Block level with Equipment, Multi-Universal via death in Hardcore Mode/Survival Test | High Universal | Multiversal, possibly Multiversal+

Durability: Building level physically (Able to take hits from Ghast's fireballs, which are this powerful, even with no armor), up to City Block level with Armor (Can survive attacks from the Ender Dragon and the Wither, both of which are capable of breaking blocks that no-sell Charged Creeper explosions, which are|able to destroy 478 cubic meters of basalt), higher with Shield (It can be used to block even the Wither'sstrongest attack), Resurrection makes Steve difficult to kill permanently | Unknown (can only be killed by the /kill command and the Void)

Stamina: Superhuman (Can regenerate their wounds and recover their endurance as long as they are well fed. Can take arrows to the head and endure being deeply immersed in lava without showing any reaction of pain)

Range: Several Meters , Hundreds of Meters with Equipment (Have access to bows and crossbows), Low Multiversal with Portals (Can travel to the Nether, a dimension of infinite size with different rules than the Overworld) Multi-Universal via death in Hardcore Mode/Survival Test | Multiversal, possibly Multiversal+

Standard Equipment: Swords, Bows and Arrows, Crossbows, Axes, Pickaxes, Shovels, Armors, Shields, Fishing Rods, Pistons, Flint and Steel, TNTs, Elytra, and many others.

Intelligence: Gifted (They are an expert warrior, miner, architect, blacksmith, alchemist, farmer, painter, designer, and many others. Their sense of survival and creativity are unparalleled)

Weaknesses: Non-splash potions take a bit over a second to drink, and can be interrupted. Splash Potions can hurt the user if they are too close. TNT takes several seconds to explode, giving enemies some time to escape. They can be interrupted while slinging arrows. Death will cause them to drop all the items they were holding at the time until they can retrieve them from where they died. Shields are only able to be used when they're sneaking, which heavily decreases their mobility.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • TNT: An ignitable block of explosives, which can easily kill/harm beings with similar durability to their own. Takes a few seconds to explode.
  • Potion: A consumable item that can be used to give buffs to the player.
    • Healing: Can be used to heal themselves quickly.
    • Regeneration: Increases their regenerative capacities.
    • Fire Resistance: Renders them nigh-immune to fire and heat-related attacks.
    • Slow Falling: Slows down their falls.
    • Potion of the Turtle Master: Dramatically increases their offenses at the cost of speed.
  • Splash Potion: A throwing kind of potion that can apply negative status effects or just instant damage to the enemy.
    • Poison: Inflicts a poison which can greatly weaken the enemy, although it cannot kill them.
    • Slowness: Slows down the enemy's movements to a crawl.
    • Weakness: Reduces the enemy's physical strength greatly.
    • Decay: Causes the target to slowly wither and decompose away.
    • Instant Damage: A kind of poison that instantly dishes out damage against the enemy. This potion ignores any armor that the target possesses and deals direct damage to their body.
    • Invisibility: A Kind of poison that makes the Player disappear. Mobs will only detect and track the player at very close range, a range which is increased when the player wears armor.
  • Lingering Potion: Another throwing potion that leaves the surrounding area of impact full of the effect of the potion for a few seconds.
  • (Enchanted) Golden Apple: Massively increases regenerative abilities, gives them a higher maximum healthpool. Enchanted variant has all previous effects except much more drastic, in addition to also providing fire resistance. Both apples can cure zombie infestation.
  • Elytra: A pair of wings that can be used to glide when in the air. The usage of fireworks can transform this into high-speed flight.
  • Bow: A simple bow weapon. Arrows can be tipped with any of the potion effects mentioned or be turned into "Spectral Arrows", which helps the Player track enemy hits by it.
    • Crossbow: A less versatile similar variation of the bow which can use the same arrows, but takes a few seconds to charge an attack, but is always gonna do the same powerful damage that's comparable to a fully-charged attack from a traditional bow.
  • Trident: A throwing weapon that can also be used in melee situations. Various enchantments can have a variety of effect on it, allowing it to come back to the player once thrown, allowing it to summon lightning under a thunderstorm or allowing the Player to propel themselves in the air at high speed when raining or when underwater.
  • Totem of Undying: When held, this item will resurrect the Player once from death. It gives the Player a moderate amount of health to deal with after being resurrected. Note that this resurrects the Player immediately, otherwise they would respawn without any of their equipment.
  • Enchantment: Possible boosts applied to the Player's weapons. They can be made sharper, more durable, enable them to produce flames or make them stronger against a specific type of enemy. Enchantments on armor can make it more durable against certain types of attacks or even damage the enemy if the Player is hit.
  • Snowballs: Does little to no damage to traditional non-elemental enemies, but can do a sustainable great amount of damage to fire-based foes like blazes which are yellow-hovering mobs which are partly made up of fire.
  • Shield: A defensive technique only usable when the Player is sneaking. When used, it allows them to completely nullify any damage to non-piercing attacks as long as he's facing the source of the damage. In some cases, it can even deflect solid physical projectiles like arrows from a skeleton if close enough.
  • Sneaking: A technique that can be used by the Player to prevent themselves from being able to walk off edges (although they're still able to get knocked back). It also allows them to stop bouncing from certain gelatin-like objects like slime blocks, and keeps them from taking damage from magma while standing on top of it. In addition, it makes the Player not able to emit vibrations while moving, or jumping.
  • Command Block:
    • Enchanting and Status Effect Inducement: Steve inflicts status effects on himself or enemies. He can also apply enchantments to weapons or items.
    • /kill: Steve uses magic to kill other people, certain mobs or even himself.
    • Summoning: Steve summons entities or objects.
    • Day-Night Cycling: Steve makes it day or night.
    • Teleportation and Apportation: Steve teleports himself or others to any given location.
    • World Border: Steve adjusts the world border, a massive wall of energy. He can move or teleport it anywhere he wants in any given time he chooses, wether it be seconds or minutes and inflict damage on or even kill those that touch or go behind it.
    • Custom Command: Steve creates an effect or has anything happen that he wants by inserting custom commands (e.g. creating all-new mobs, effects or even commands, performing certain actions he normally can't, etc..)

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Steve's cultural impact extends far beyond his origins as the default character for new Minecraft players. Here are some key points highlighting his significance:

  • Cultural Icon: Critics and commentators regard Steve as the face of the Minecraft franchise, frequently appearing in promotional materials and advertising. Despite lacking a formal backstory or in-game dialogue, he is often viewed as the closest character to a protagonist within the game.
  • Recognition and Popularity: Publications like Glixel and GamesRadar+ have labeled Steve one of the most iconic video game characters. GamesRadar+ describes him as the "enduring symbol" of Minecraft, with his character model recognized as one of the most identifiable silhouettes in video game culture.
  • BAFTA Recognition: In 2024, a BAFTA poll involving around 4,000 respondents ranked Steve as the thirteenth most iconic video game character of all time, underscoring his significance in gaming history.
  • Fan Theories: Steve has inspired numerous fan theories within online communities. One theory suggested a connection between Steve and Tommy Vercetti, the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, based on their physical similarities. This theory gained traction from a 2009 Tumblr post by Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft, who acknowledged influences from GTA but later denied any direct connection.
  • Herobrine Myth: The character of Herobrine, a creepypasta derived from Steve with solid white eyes, emerged in 2010 and became a notable internet meme within the Minecraft community. Herobrine gained significant popularity and even appeared in some official Minecraft artwork.
  • Memes and Media: Steve's portrayal by Jack Black in A Minecraft Movie has also sparked memes, particularly due to the live-action interpretation of the character. This further cements Steve's position in popular culture beyond the gaming community.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Default Character Origins: From the Alpha stage until version 1.7.10, Steve was the only default skin available to new players. His appearance could be altered using launchers. Before Alex was introduced, Steve was the only model and avatar option.
  • Absence in Story Mode: Steve and Alex were notably absent from Minecraft: Story Mode. Telltale Games decided to create a new original character to represent the player. However, Steve and Alex appear in Minecraft Dungeons as playable characters, making it the first Minecraft spin-off to feature them.
  • Alex Cameo: In Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two, Alex's head is featured as a target at an archery range.
  • Player Appearance Consistency: Whether in single-player or multiplayer modes, all players share the same model, with only skins and names varying. This applies to both Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.
  • Different Models in Legends: In Minecraft Legends, the player characters feature different models than in other Minecraft games, likely to match the game's unique art style. Some skins even alter the characters' models due to changes in hair or clothing.
  • Height Differences in Dungeons: In Minecraft Dungeons, players are depicted slightly shorter than some hostile mobs, like zombies and witches. This contrasts with vanilla Minecraft, where players and these mobs share the same height.
  • Steve in Smash: Steve is the first indie game character and protagonist to be a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While other indie game characters like Sans and Cuphead appear as Mii Fighters, and Shovel Knight and Shantae appear as assist trophies or spirits, Steve is the first fully-fledged indie character in the game.
  • Mysterious Lore: The background of the player character in Minecraft is left deliberately vague, creating an air of mystery. Fans have speculated that the player could have a tragic past, being the last human in a lonely world. Game Theory has explored this idea, theorizing connections between the player and hostile mobs like the Wither and Ender Dragon.
  • Notch's Vision: Notch, the game's creator, and Mojang developers never intended to add specific lore or human NPCs to maintain the game's mysterious atmosphere. Steve and Alex are meant to be simple, genderless human beings.
  • Player's Size: A player in Minecraft is 32 pixels tall, equating to about 2 meters (6.56 feet). Their cubic volume is estimated at 322,273 cubic centimeters, meaning they would weigh approximately 342kg (754lb) in real life.
  • Heroic Acts: Before version 1.11, the player's only heroic tasks in Minecraft were defeating the Ender Dragon or Wither and protecting passive or tamed mobs. With updates, more advancements like saving villages and defending iron golems from illagers have given players more opportunities for heroic deeds.
  • Appearances in Dungeons and Legends: In Minecraft Dungeons, the player characters are adventurers on a quest to stop evil forces from world domination. In Minecraft Legends, the players are humble adventurers chosen by the Hosts to fight evil and restore peace across the land.
  • Pop Culture Icon: Steve is widely recognized by fans and gamers and has made appearances in movies, TV shows, and other video games as easter eggs or cameos.
  • Steve’s Early Name: Before being named Steve, the default character was known as "The Minecraft Guy" or "Mr. Minecraft." Despite this, Notch has said that Steve was not his original name. The player is often referred to simply as "The Player," with a personality that reflects the user.
  • Popular in YouTube Animations: Steve became a popular subject of fan-made animations on YouTube, further expanding his recognition in the gaming community.
  • Movie: In the 2025 film A Minecraft Movie, Steve is portrayed by actor Jack Black.
  • Lego Club Magazine: According to Lego Club Magazine, there were initial suggestions that Steve and Alex had a romantic relationship, highlighting their differing interests—Steve's focus on mining and alchemy versus Alex's love for exploration and hunting. However, in a subsequent issue, this was corrected, stating that Steve and Alex are actually best friends. Overall, the characters in Minecraft are typically considered asexual, with the exception of villagers and certain animals, which can be seen having offspring in the game. This portrayal emphasizes the focus on creativity and building within the Minecraft universe rather than romantic relationships.
